Got yourself a new phone? Congratulations! Now you need to buy a phone cover that fits well and protects your device from drops and scratches. This tutorial shows how to choose the right phone case for any smartphone.

How to Browse for a Phone Case

A few years ago, choosing a phone case for a smartphone was quite simple. Older phone models often had a similar form factor, and their cameras were positioned at comparable angles.

However, times have changed. Due to the sheer variety of multi-camera and ultra-wide-angle smartphones, it’s becoming harder to find a one-size-fits-all phone case. This is especially true for Android users.

If you’ve just started browsing for a phone case and don’t know what to look for, there’s a simple rule of thumb to follow: check your phone’s rear and front camera positions, and browse for comparable products online. You have to search by your model’s name and number.

Check online images of your phone cover with neatly designed holes for cameras. For example, the case as shown above has perfectly cut holes for my Samsung Galaxy A12, which features four rear cameras: primary, ultra-wide, macro, and depth cameras. The cover also includes three tiny slits to encase the phone’s front cameras.

What Type of Phone Case Do I Need?

Once you’re sure about the camera alignment of your case, consider examining the type of phone case you need. Phone cases now serve as a form of self-expression, and there are many more varieties than before. While choosing one for your smartphone, keep the following factors in mind.

1. Material

Websites like Amazon or AliExpress host a vast array of materials for phone cases, accommodating the individual preferences of consumers. The most common materials are as follows;

Ordinary Plastic: a big advantage of plastic phone covers is being transparent. This allows you to clearly see your phone screen and back panel. Consider opting for a plastic cover with anti-yellowing and drop protection properties, like this model for the iPhone 14.

Hard Leather: leather always feels good to the touch and is a durable material that protects your phone from overheating, scratches, and drops. For example, I have a magnetic closure-based premium leather phone case for my OnePlus Nord CE 3 Pro. Like most wallet cases, it includes cardholders and additional pockets for paper bills. You can also opt for a cheaper faux leather case.

Metallic: metal cases are all weather-resistant and do not bend or become deformed easily. For example, this iPhone 14 cover was built using a hardy aluminum alloy with heat-resistant rubber pads.

Silicone: silicone is a good choice for phone cases, as it combines the durability of metal with the lightweight nature of ordinary plastics. Caseative’s silicone iPhone 15 case has a signature wave pattern for a classy look. Like plastics, silicone-based cases are easy to install and easy to remove.

2. Protection

All phone cases are designed to protect a phone from drops and everyday wear and tear. It’s the reason behind the raised area around the camera bump. Other protection features that you might want to consider are:

Heavy-Duty/Ruggedness: if you’re worried that you drop your phone too often, go for a rugged, heavy-duty design. It usually means multiple layers of protection. The Samsung Galaxy S23 has a metal bracket, hard PC, soft rubber, and a lens and screen protector.

Waterproofing: while many phone covers claim protection against accidental spillage, you can also search for a waterproof phone pouch. This Hiearcool case is ideal for beach visitors and cruise lovers.

Slim profile: slim-fit phone covers are useful for a better grip and, of course, are usually transparent. It makes them easier to handle. A good example is the X-Level slim-fit shockproof cover for Samsung Galaxy S24.

Screen Guard: while many phones come with their own screen guards, you can get an extra screen guard when you purchase a phone cover. This gives you a double layer of protection. For example, this phone cover by Miracase comes with raised edges, a built-in glass screen protector, and camera lens protector.

3. Function

What is the purpose of your phone cover? Consider these core purposes.

Magnetic case: drivers may need a phone cover that sticks like a magnet to their dashboards. Check out this MagSafe-compatible smartphone holder for iPhone as well as Android models.

Wallet/folio cases: a wallet/folio case helps you keep your money, cards, and identification documents along with your phone. I find my wallet-based case for Samsung Galaxy A12 very useful while traveling. It also holds extra SIM cards.

Choosing the Color and Finish

Once you’ve covered the basics of phone protection, naturally, you’ll want to choose a color and finish that complements your expression and lifestyle. Of course, it depends on your budget. But generally, personal preference matters most. Choose a color that resonates with you and reflects your personality.

If you’re a bold and passionate person, get a striking red case. Gold and silver colors are available for those who like a bit of bling. If you can afford to splurge on designer brands, check out this designer iPhone 15 case by Coach. Browsing online, you can find comparable phone covers by Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and other luxury brands.

There are many colors options for phone cases. Personally, I prefer a black cover, as it doesn’t fade easily. Others may prefer white or yellow to have that fresh look. Gray is a balance between both and is a good choice for the sleek-minded. You can also go for a matte, glossy, or custom design.

It’s crucial to put some thought into choosing the right phone case.
