Windows 11 File Explorer Context Menu Update: Microsoft Reintroduces Edit with Paint and Notepad Options

When Microsoft revamped File Explorer in Windows 11, many users were initially hesitant; however, the changes eventually gained acceptance due to a clearer, more streamlined context menu. Nonetheless, I find myself reverting to keyboard shortcuts for fundamental commands, as navigating to the top menu for cut, copy, and delete options feels less practical.

Since that update, Microsoft has continually expanded the menu, resulting in it becoming significantly more cluttered compared to its Windows 10 predecessor. Recently, a user highlighted another puzzling adjustment to the File Manager’s context menu, adding to the list of confusing modifications.

In the latest Windows 11 version, specifically 11.2410.28.0, users noticed the addition of “Edit with Paint”and “Edit in Notepad”options when right-clicking on an image.

This alteration raises several concerns. For starters, these editing options are already present in the Open with submenu. Moreover, this new addition introduces another default choice that may not be necessary or wanted.

Additionally, it begs the question: how does one edit a JPG file using Notepad? It seems unnecessary to include options that do not correspond with the file type; by now, File Explorer should have sufficient intelligence to recognize file formats and propose appropriate editing or opening applications.

On top of that, there are currently two identical Share buttons—one located at the top of the window and another within the context menu—causing further redundancy.

In summary, the File Explorer context menu is a critical feature designed for efficiency and ease of use. The ongoing alterations clearly detract from that user-friendly experience. Let’s hope Microsoft takes notice of these inconsistencies and implements necessary fixes.
