The Samsung Galaxy S24 FE, the latest addition to the mid-range segment, is now available! This new Fan Edition model introduces numerous enhancements compared to last year’s Galaxy S23 FE, primarily due to its robust AI capabilities.
Much of the design resonates with its predecessor, yet the S24 FE draws inspiration from the pricier Galaxy models like the S24 Ultra. At $649, it achieves an impressive balance between features and cost, definitely sparking interest for many. In contrast to the inconsistent Pixel models and the recently unveiled iPhone 16 series, which has its shortcomings, the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE stands out as worthy of its relatively modest price increase this year. Here’s why I’m eager to experience the new Galaxy S24 FE.
Significant Improvements in the Galaxy S24 FE
As a long-time user of Pixel devices and more recently, a Nothing Phone owner, I find the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE highly compelling. The improved camera and upgraded hardware grab my attention, and the AI features appear quite practical.
The Galaxy S24 FE maintains a close resemblance to its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 FE, but the $50 increase is justifiable given enhancements such as a larger display, improved battery life, higher durability with upgraded panels, and all the AI functionalities that Galaxy AI offers.
Stunning Camera Capabilities in the Galaxy S24 FE
Samsung’s ‘Fan Edition’ smartphones come with remarkable camera capabilities, and the Galaxy S24 FE is no exception. This year’s triple camera setup enjoys significant upgrades thanks to the introduction of the ProVisual engine – a first for the Fan Edition line. While it’s natural to compare it with the S24 Ultra, and the S24 FE may not completely match its capabilities, it certainly surpasses competitors within its pricing tier.
Additional enhancements include superior night photography, the ability to record videos in up to 8K at 30 frames per second (up from 24fps in the S23 FE), and an improved 10MP front-facing camera.
Where the hardware might fall short, Galaxy AI compensates effectively.
AI Features on the Galaxy S24 FE
If you’re an AI enthusiast, the S24 FE offers numerous engaging features. All the Galaxy AI functionalities are present, allowing users to explore these capabilities without a hefty investment. These features are seamlessly integrated across various applications, enhancing daily tasks or enriching user experiences.
For example, the Call Assist feature in the Phone app uses Samsung’s live translation technology to automatically translate conversations if participants speak different languages. The latest 6.1.1 update extends this live translation to third-party apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Meet, making it extremely user-friendly.
Live Translation is also an integral part of the Interpreter app, which translates conversations between users speaking different languages. Its new ‘listening mode’ passively listens and translates dialogues without requiring user intervention, making it an excellent tool for making new friends or navigating foreign locales.
You also have Chat Assist, which integrates AI into the keyboard functionality. This allows users to generate written content, rewrite messages, translate texts, and conduct proofreading.
The Notes app comes with several AI enhancements, enabling automatic note formatting, style changes, summarization of lengthy notes, and even the inclusion of AI-generated images from sketches. The Voice Recorder app can transcribe and summarize recordings right on the device, saving them for future reference in the Notes app. Users have the option to edit any discrepancies in the transcription.
The Browsing Assist feature utilizes AI to summarize lengthy online articles, helping you save time and find essential information quickly.
Other useful AI features include Photo Assist, which employs generative editing to remove unwanted objects, and Portrait Studio for transforming selfies into cartoonish images or sketches. The Drawing Assist feature allows users in the Notes app to create AI images from simple sketches, though outlining might prove challenging without an S Pen.
Lastly, the Photo Ambient Wallpaper feature alters wallpaper aesthetics based on real-time weather conditions, providing a unique touch to your device.
The Health Assist functionality is currently integrated only with the Galaxy Watch Ultra and Galaxy Watch 7. And, of course, there’s the Circle to Search feature that you’ll already be familiar with.
In summary, the AI functionalities in the Galaxy S24 FE are extensive and can be incredibly helpful. Depending on individual preferences, users might find certain features, such as browsing assist, live translation services, and photo ambient wallpaper particularly appealing.
All-Day Battery Life, Expansive Display, and the New Exynos 2400e Chip
The Galaxy S24 FE boasts a significantly larger device footprint than last year’s S23 FE. Featuring a massive 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2x display, it mirrors the size of the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which is a significant advantage for video streaming and mobile gaming enthusiasts, who can also experience enhanced graphics due to ray tracing capabilities.
However, with this larger display and advanced mobile gaming technology, the device requires an efficient power source. The 4700 mAh battery provides more power than its predecessor, the S23 FE, although it’s slightly less than the capacity offered by the S24 Ultra. Nevertheless, a single charge can easily last through a full day, even with regular to heavy usage. Considering it’s priced at half of the flagship device, it delivers everything mid-range users could hope for.
The latest Exynos 2400e chipset comes with significant improvements in CPU and GPU performance over its predecessor, the Exynos 2200 used in the S23 FE. Furthermore, it supports 4.5W reverse wireless charging and includes a 512GB storage option, which is a welcome addition.
One downside of the Galaxy S24 FE is the noticeable protrusion of the rear triple-camera setup, which, although less problematic than the ones on the iPhone 16 series, can lead to a slight wobble when placed on a flat surface. The bezels are marginally thicker, although this is only a slight increase.
Durability and Longevity of the Galaxy S24 FE
Constructed with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on both the front and back, along with an aluminum frame, the Galaxy S24 FE is designed to withstand light scratches and minor drops. Samsung’s track record for producing reliable hardware surpasses that of many other Android competitors. Furthermore, Samsung has committed to providing 7 years of OS updates for the Galaxy S24 FE, ensuring that the device remains relevant well into the future.
Available in five appealing color options – Blue, Graphite, Gray, Mint, and Yellow – the S24 FE ensures there’s something for every user’s taste. While the discounted S23 FE may seem appealing currently, the S24 FE emerges as a game changer across multiple aspects, promising to future-proof users for years ahead. It strikes a commendable balance between entry-level and flagship Samsung smartphones.
Although I may not have been a Samsung enthusiast previously, the Galaxy S24 FE boasts enough enticing features at a reasonable price point to change my perspective. Personally, I’m excited to explore some of its AI functionalities like Call Assist, Interpreter, and Ambient Wallpaper, and I look forward to recording stunning 8K videos at 30fps.
