Step-by-Step Guide to Installing and Using WhatsApp on Your Windows PC
WhatsApp ranks among the leading messaging applications globally. Until recently, utilizing it on a computer was quite a challenge. Fortunately, that has changed now. This guide will explain how to set up and operate WhatsApp on your Windows device using built-in applications and browser options.
How to Install WhatsApp on Your Windows PC
Although WhatsApp installation packages can be found on various third-party websites, it’s essential to download the software from trusted Microsoft sources for your safety. There are two primary methods for installation you can choose from.
1. Installation via Microsoft Store
The most straightforward way to get WhatsApp on your Windows PC is through the Microsoft Store. The process is quick, allowing you to launch the app on your Windows device without hassle.
After installation, click Open to start the app. You will be greeted with a familiar launch screen and your personalized notification sounds, just like on Android or iPhone devices.
2. Accessing via Phone Link
The Phone Link application on your Windows PC offers an alternative way to connect to WhatsApp on your Android smartphone. It typically comes pre-installed on Windows 11 and 10, but if it’s missing, you can download it here. Currently, iPhones do not support WhatsApp through this app, but you can still use it for SMS.
Linking WhatsApp on Windows to Your Mobile Device
Once you have successfully installed the app, the next step is linking it to your existing WhatsApp account. This allows you to connect the Windows version of WhatsApp with your smartphone’s app using either method outlined below.
The first method, using the Microsoft Store, supports both iPhone and Android. The second method, utilizing Phone Link, is currently limited to certain Android models but still allows functionality for SMS, pictures, and other activities.
1. Linking the WhatsApp Version from the Microsoft Store
Start by launching WhatsApp on your Windows PC. Click on Get Started to continue. You will be presented with a setup screen offering two options for linking.
Select Link with phone number, which requires you to accurately enter your country code along with your phone number.
While this method is straightforward, I prefer not to use it due to frequent changes in my phone number and device. Instead, I find the QR code method to be simpler.
Open WhatsApp on your mobile device. For Android users, tap Menu followed by the three-dot icon. For iPhone users, just go to Settings. On both platforms, click on Linked devices, followed by Link a device.
Next, scan the QR code displayed on your Windows PC. Ensure that WhatsApp has camera access on your phone, which you would have authorized during the app installation. Scanning the QR code will log you into your WhatsApp account.
You’ll see a Syncing. Keep app open message on your phone as the devices connect. You can link up to four devices to your WhatsApp account with this method.
Once linked, you can start using WhatsApp on your Windows PC. Remarkably, you can even turn off the internet on your phone while still sending and receiving messages on your PC, including making calls.
Fun Fact: You can send messages to yourself on WhatsApp, as displayed in the image above.
2. Utilizing the Phone Link App
Once the Phone Link app is installed, it will also enable you to incorporate WhatsApp on your Windows devices. Start by selecting your Android device to commence the linking process. You may need to enter your Windows PC sign-in details.
The next step involves linking your mobile device to your Microsoft account by scanning a QR code. Alternatively, you can link through a phone browser by navigating to “aka.ms/linkpc.” Make sure to scan the QR code within 10 minutes to begin syncing.
After scanning, a QR code will generate a URL that requires installing the Link with Windows app from Google Play or App Store. Once the app is successfully installed, click Continue to proceed.
The following page will prompt you to enter a six-letter code displayed on your Phone Link app on Windows. This must be completed within three minutes, after which you will be prompted to log into your Microsoft account. Input the email and password associated with your Windows account, and grant the necessary permissions.
After syncing is successful, your phone should display a Device linking complete status. On your PC, you’re all set to use your phone; just click Continue to access the phone features.
You should now be able to see the Phone Link app along with its message history on your Windows PC. Click Get started to begin using it.
To use WhatsApp with the Phone Link app on a Windows PC, ensure your Android device is compatible with the list of supported models. Currently, iPhones are not compatible. Click Use a mobile app on my PC to start.
Navigate to Apps -> All Apps and choose “WhatsApp” from the Phone Link app’s available options. You will be prompted to grant notification access to the “Link to Windows” app on your smartphone.
Your WhatsApp application should appear on your Windows desktop exactly as it does on your mobile device, allowing for typical usage.
However, unlike the version available from the Microsoft Store, the Phone Link app does not permit sending WhatsApp messages if the paired phone is offline.
What to Do If Your Windows PC Is Incompatible with WhatsApp
It isn’t mandatory to install WhatsApp on your Windows device. If it isn’t compatible, you can still use WhatsApp on the web. Simply sign in using the unique QR code generated for your browser and device. This method is quick and efficient, displaying all your WhatsApp conversations in a browser window, from which you can log out easily. It serves as a great option for temporary access on a new Windows, Linux, or Mac device.
WhatsApp is an exceedingly prevalent app worldwide. However, if you’re not using it, don’t worry—many others prefer alternative messaging apps that prioritize user privacy.
