Step-by-Step Guide to Importing Video Files into Your Apple TV Library

Important Information

  • Within the Apple TV app, click on the three-dot icon located in the sidebar, then choose ‘Add files/folder to library‘ to select and import your video files. These files will sync across all devices using the Apple TV app.
  • Once imported, video files are automatically sorted into the ‘Recently added’ folder in the sidebar. You can alter this categorization by hovering over the file, clicking on the three-dot icon, and selecting Media Kind > Movies/TV Shows.
  • If you wish to customize the artwork for your imported video files, access the Properties > Artwork > Add custom artwork, choose your desired image, select Set as default, and click OK.

Unlike numerous other streaming applications, Apple TV provides the unique feature of importing video files into its library, allowing for seamless syncing across Apple devices. This enables you to enjoy your videos anytime and anywhere. If you are an Apple TV+ subscriber (a requirement to use the app), follow these steps to import video files into your Apple TV library.

Steps to Import Video Files to Your Apple TV Library

If you’re using a Mac, the Apple TV app is pre-installed. For PC users, you will need to download the Apple TV app from the Microsoft Store.

Launch the Apple TV app and sign in with your Apple account. Next, click on the three-dot icon in the upper left corner and choose either Add files to library or Add folder to library.

If you selected ‘Add folder to library’, navigate to the specific folder containing the video files, select it, and click on Select Folder.

If you opted for ‘Add files to library’, locate and select your video files within the appropriate folder, then click Open.

Note: You can add only one folder at a time, but you can import multiple video files simultaneously.

After making your selections, the video files will be transferred to your Recently added folder.

The video files will automatically sync, making them accessible on your other Apple devices via the Apple TV app.

Modifying Artwork for Imported Video Files in Apple TV

Imported video files typically do not have associated posters or artwork. However, you can easily add or change this artwork yourself. Here’s how:

Hover over the imported video files and click on the three-dot icon.

Next, select Properties.

Go to the Artwork tab and click on the Add Artwork option located at the bottom right corner.

Select your desired image and click Open.

Click Set as Default at the bottom left.

Finally, click OK.

In just a few easy steps, your imported video file will now feature the custom artwork you applied.

Adding Imported Videos to the ‘Movies’ or ‘TV Shows’ Folder

By default, all imported videos are stored in the ‘Recently added’ folder. If you want to organize them into the dedicated ‘Movies’ or ‘TV Shows’ folder, follow these steps:

Within the ‘Recently added’ folder, hover over a video and click on the three-dot icon located in its bottom right corner.

Click on Media Kind and choose either Movies or TV Shows.

When prompted, click Change.

Your imported video will now be placed in the relevant folder in the sidebar.

If you’re interested in adding music or songs, you can follow a similar process in the Apple Music app.
