Step-by-Step Guide to Adding Pronouns and Other Details in Your Slack Profile
On Slack, users have the opportunity to incorporate gender pronouns into their profiles, enhancing the experience of connection. Beyond this feature, modifying your display name and including a pronunciation for your name can further deepen interpersonal relationships within the platform.
Enabling Pronouns on Slack: A Guide for Administrators
To utilize the pronouns feature, it must be activated by the workspace Admin. Individual members lack the capability to add pronouns to their profiles without this permission.
If you’re the admin, log in through a web browser. Click on the name of your organization located at the top left, followed by navigating to Tools & settings -> Workspace settings.
Select the organization name from the top left, then go to Settings & administration and select Workspace settings.
Within the Settings tab, scroll down and click on Pronouns Display.
Press the Expand button, choose Show Pronouns on Profiles, then click Save.
Now, all workspace members can add their pronouns to their profiles.
Adding Pronouns on Slack for Web and Desktop Users
Once the admin has activated the pronouns feature, you can incorporate pronouns into your profile through either the web or desktop application, following similar steps.
Click on your profile picture and select Profile.
On the right, click on + Add pronouns.
Enter your pronouns in the Pronouns text box and select Save changes.
Incorporating Pronouns on the Slack Mobile App
The procedure for adding pronouns through the Slack mobile application is distinct from the desktop or web versions. Open the app, log in, tap on your profile picture in the upper right corner, and select View profile.
Next, tap on Edit profile.
In the Pronouns field, input your chosen pronouns, then hit the Save button at the top right.
Modifying Your Slack Display Name
By changing your display name, you signal to others how you prefer to be addressed, rather than always using your full name. For instance, I prefer to be called “Danny” instead of my complete name, as it’s more approachable. This change pairs well with a straightforward Slack status.
The following steps apply for both mobile and desktop applications.
Click on your profile picture. In the subsequent menu, choose Profile for desktop or View profile for the mobile app.
Beside your name, select Edit for desktop or Edit profile for mobile.
Type your desired display name in the Display Name field, then save your changes.
Incorporating Name Pronunciation in Slack
If your name poses a challenge for pronunciation, Slack offers a handy tool to assist others in getting it right. You can input phonetic syllables or any indication that may help clarify pronunciations.
You’ll access this feature in the same profile settings where you adjusted your display name. Scroll down until you locate Name pronunciation, enter the information, and select Save changes.
Updating Your Slack Profile Picture
Changing your profile photo significantly aids others in recognizing you, enabling efficient communication whether you use a free or paid version of Slack. Start by clicking on your existing profile picture or the placeholder icon if a photo isn’t set. Go to your profile settings similarly to when you want to adjust your name pronunciation.
Select Upload photo (on desktop) or Edit photo (on mobile).
Choose your new profile image. On mobile, you can opt to take a new photo or pick one from your existing library.
From adding pronouns to updating your display name, name pronunciations, or profile pictures, Slack simplifies these tasks. Understanding how to implement these adjustments enhances your experience within the Slack workspace, along with mastering important Slack keyboard shortcuts.
