Patch Tuesday for the most recent version of Windows 11, 22H2 (Moment 2) may be causing SSDs and boot times to become slower.

Patch Tuesday updates were made available by Microsoft this past week, since the date corresponded to the second Tuesday of the month. It was also with this cumulative update that Moment 2 was sent out to all users; and according to the comments from certain users, the upgrade may be causing SSDs or other boot devices to run more slowly. A person with the username “mesp21” posted in a thread on Reddit claiming that the speeds of their NVMe SSD were reduced by more than half, going from the rated 7,000MB/s to as low as 3,000MB/s. When they rolled back to the previous version, the problem appeared to be resolved.

They write:

Tanked my SSD nvme reading and writing speeds, like A LOT. Went from 7000 to 3000, sometimes 1000 using the balance energy profile in my Legion 5 2021. Just uninstalled the cumulative update and my SSD is reaching the 7000 read speed again and Windows is snappy again.

This remark has a significant number of upvotes, which suggests that at least some of those other people have also had the same kinds of problems. Following the installation of the patch on Tuesday, a few of the other users in this forum have reacted to this statement by stating that the loading times of their games are “noticeably” slower, and that they are experiencing “stuttering” difficulties.

CrystalDiskMark being performed both before and after the upgrade is seen in a screenshot that was uploaded by a different user who goes by the name “Mrbigdog99.” The consecutive writes do give the impression that there is a significant slowdown:

Another customer reports experiencing the same issues, including longer periods required for the computer to load up, however this time it occurred with the first version of Moment 2. (KB5022913). Here is what the user sebascq has to say:

Hello guys! so I updated my laptop to the 22H2 SO 22621.1344 and noticed that the boot up time increased by a lot it went from around 14 seconds to 31 seconds which is weird

There is a possibility that this is an altogether unrelated issue, despite the fact that Microsoft has said that a flaw that caused a comparable slowness in file copying has been resolved in Moment 2. It’s interesting to note that the problem with the NVMe speed has been around for a while, since Windows 11 has also been plagued by similar issues in the past.
