Microsoft to Discontinue Xbox Avatars and Provide Refunds

In 2008, Microsoft introduced Xbox Avatars, and a revamped version was launched in 2019 for both Xbox One and Windows 10.

Recently, Microsoft revealed in a support document on its website that it will phase out Xbox Avatars, with the functionality set to be discontinued on Xbox consoles and Windows 10 starting January 9, 2025.

The company decided to remove this feature due to “low engagement” levels. As stated in the support document, players who made purchases in the Avatar Store between November 1, 2023, and January 9, 2025, will automatically receive refunds.

As noted by Microsoft, users can anticipate receiving these refunds during the initial months of 2025.

The refunds will encompass various purchases made in the Avatar Store, such as clothing, accessories, and props. However, items acquired as part of a bundle will not be eligible for a full refund, according to Microsoft.

Despite the discontinuation of modernized Avatars, players will still have opportunities to customize their gaming experiences. Microsoft has indicated plans to rollout new features over time, which will include options for altering a player’s background and profile colors on Xbox consoles.

The classic Xbox 360 Avatars will remain unaffected by these changes. Even after the new Avatars are removed from Xbox consoles and Windows 10, users will retain access to their previous Avatars and the original Avatar Editor app for creating new ones.

Additionally, Microsoft will maintain support for the Xbox Original Avatars app on Xbox consoles and Windows 10 for the foreseeable future.

In related news, Microsoft has also introduced the AI-driven Support Virtual Agent, aimed at helping Xbox users efficiently address their support-related inquiries.

All purchases related to Xbox Avatars made from November 1, 2023, until January 9, 2025, will be refunded to your active payment method once the Xbox Avatar Editor app is no longer in service. You can monitor your purchase and refund records here:
