Microsoft Teams to Cease Functionality on Older Windows 11 and Windows 10 Versions
Many users often disregard OS updates due to concerns about stability. If you’re a Microsoft Teams user who has been postponing OS updates for several months, there’s troubling news ahead. You will soon encounter frequent alerts prompting you to upgrade to the latest supported version of the operating system.
Recently, Microsoft released an important announcement regarding the future of the Teams application. The goal of this initiative is to transition all users to a supported OS version to facilitate the delivery of new features and ongoing support.
If you’re still utilizing Windows 11 21H2, which has been out of support for an extended period, it’s advisable to upgrade to the 22H2 version before January 15, 2025. Additionally, Windows 10 and 11 LTSC users are urged to follow the announcement and upgrade to the latest available OS version.
macOS users are also affected; it’s essential to be on macOS 13 or a later version. This requirement is based on Teams support guidelines, which state that “When a new version of macOS is released, the new version and the two versions immediately preceding it become the supported versions.”
Consequences of Not Updating Your OS
Initially, you’ll receive notifications urging you to upgrade. If you’re using a particularly outdated version, Teams will cease functioning on your PC until you install a supported OS version. It’s important to note that this affects the desktop client only, not the web version of Teams.
Microsoft’s new Teams app is reported to be 50% faster than its predecessor. Its lightweight design allows it to run on systems with basic specifications while upgrading the user interface to meet modern standards. Users have expressed dissatisfaction with the mandatory migration to the new version, which is now a common practice.
A few months ago, Microsoft also started encouraging users to transition to the new Outlook app, phasing out the old Mail and Calendar application.
