Microsoft Teams Gains Ability to Open File Links from Any Microsoft 365 App Anywhere
In 2025, Microsoft Teams is set to introduce a significant new feature: the capability to open file links from any Microsoft 365 application seamlessly, whether you’re using a browser, the desktop application, or directly within Teams itself.
This means that Teams will enable users to select the file opening method across all Microsoft 365 applications, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Microsoft aims to establish a cohesive experience for opening files across various platforms. Nonetheless, this feature will remain optional, allowing users to set individual preferences for file opening within Teams.

This new feature is slated for release in Teams in February 2025. Additionally, Microsoft plans to improve the spell-check functionality on the platform, ensuring that it remains effective but with enhanced suggestions.
Regarding the opening of links to cloud-stored files in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, users will have the option to choose whether they open in a browser, in desktop applications, or directly within Teams. This preference will be carried over across Microsoft 365 applications, providing a unified ‘open file’ experience. However, users still have the ability to select their Teams file opening preferences independently if desired.
