Microsoft KB5001716 Automatic Update: Windows PCs Upgraded Without User Consent
Following the release of the October 2024 Patch Tuesday updates for both Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft has discreetly rolled out the KB5001716 update across various systems. This particular update introduces a revamped user interface (UI) for the Windows Updates feature.
One notable aspect of KB5001716 is that Windows may initiate the download and installation of feature updates if your system is nearing or has already hit the support end date for your current Windows version. These feature updates are crucial as they enhance functionality and bolster your device’s security measures.
Available for manual download since October 10, 2024, the KB5001716 update is now being forcefully installed on numerous Windows 10 and 11 devices without user approval.
This update affects systems operating on the following versions:
- Windows 11: 21H2
- Windows 10: 22H2, 21H2, 21H1, 20H2, 2004
Microsoft explains the rationale behind this in a support article related to KB5001716:
According to the report, Microsoft aims to enhance the Windows Update experience with this update. However, many perceive it as a push for users to transition to Windows 11, which has attracted significant criticism. Users should have the autonomy to decide which operating system they wish to utilize and can opt to upgrade through the Windows Update settings if they choose.
It’s also worth noting that the KB5001716 update is not currently available through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Windows Update for Business, or directly via Windows Update.
Nevertheless, Microsoft previously enacted a similar approach with the Windows 10 KB4023057 update, later releasing it on WSUS and other update channels, so it’s plausible that KB5001716 may follow suit.
Upon installation of this update, Windows may start downloading and installing feature updates if your device is close to, or has surpassed, its support expiration for the current version of Windows. Users may occasionally receive notifications about issues preventing Windows Update from keeping their system secure and updated. For instance, notifications may appear indicating that your device is running an unsupported version of Windows or that it doesn’t meet the necessary hardware specifications for the installed Windows version.
