Microsoft Edge for Android Trials Exciting New Extensions, Including VPNs like Nord and Touch

The landscape of mobile browsers has significantly improved over time; however, a pivotal feature that remains limited is the ability to use extensions. Microsoft Edge for Android has been trialing support for extensions for a while now and has recently added several new options to its roster. Previously, users had access to only a few extensions in both the Canary and stable versions of the browser.

A keen reader from Windows Latest, Leo, pointed out on Reddit that the Microsoft Edge Canary version for Android has seen a discreet update regarding extensions. A new experimental setting named “Extension V3” has been introduced, which indicates that toggling it on will bring additional extensions into play.

In an earlier report, Windows Latest detailed the arrival of extension version “v2” for Edge Canary, which permitted users to install multiple extensions simultaneously.

Upon testing, it was noted that version “V3” maintains the functionality for parallel installations. We activated this feature by navigating to edge://flags/, enabling the Android V3 option, and then restarting the application.

Subsequently, we were able to install both ScriptCat and Violentmonkey without encountering any problems.

It was also observed that the V3 version has introduced a total of nine new extensions, including:

  • NordVPN – Official extension from NordVPN to easily switch IP addresses.
  • Touch VPN – A highly popular free VPN option available on the Chrome Store.
  • Browsec VPN – Another free VPN service for Edge mobile that we initially tested back in 2016.
  • Sponsor Block for YouTube – Helps bypass advertisements while viewing YouTube videos on Edge.
  • AIXDownloader – Capable of downloading media files from various websites.
  • FetchV Video Downloader for m3u8 – Similar to AIXDownloader, it can extract media from sites in multiple formats.
  • AdGuard VPN – A free extension for Edge with optional premium features.
  • Violentmonkey – Enables users to run scripts on websites to enhance their functionality.
  • ScriptCat – A user script runner that serves as an alternative to Violentmonkey.

Among these new additions, there are four VPNs, two script managers, two download assistive tools, and one extension dedicated to eliminating YouTube ads.

Expansion of Extensions: What’s Next?

Although Microsoft is progressively introducing extensions for mobile users, the rollout is not as swift as anticipated.

In the meantime, you can manually install any extensions by following our guide, which requires enabling the Developer options for Edge and then adding your desired extensions.

However, we caution against this approach as it may result in crashing your Microsoft Edge app, and non-optimized extensions can lead to performance issues. It might take some time before users can fully access Edge web store extensions on their mobile devices.
