Microsoft Edge 130.0.2849.5 Beta Channel Update Introduces Major Enhancements

Microsoft has launched a new version of its Edge web browser for beta testers on the beta channel. The latest version, 130.0.2849.5, is now available for Windows, macOS, and Linux users.

This release of Microsoft Edge is notable for its array of new features, updates, fixes, and policy revisions, marking it as one of the most significant updates in recent times.

In version 130.0.2849.5, Microsoft Edge officially deprecates the Token Binding feature, which utilizes cryptographic certificates on both ends of the TLS connection to mitigate the security risks associated with bearer tokens that could be compromised. With the deprecation of Token Binding in Microsoft Edge version 130, the AllowTokenBindingForUrls policy has also become obsolete.

On macOS, Edge now effortlessly opens links in Teams. If you set Microsoft Edge as your default browser and enable this feature, web links shared via the Teams desktop app across chats, channels, calendars, and other areas will open automatically in the logged-in profile of the Teams app without requiring reauthentication in the browser. This enhancement significantly streamlines access to content.

Administrators have the ability to manage the availability of this functionality through the “Choose Which Browser Opens Web Links” policy in Microsoft 365.

Moreover, Microsoft Edge introduces three navigation enhancements to Edge Settings, aiming to improve the efficiency of locating browser configurations. Importantly, the functionality of settings remains unchanged, and all settings are retained on their current page but organized into easily accessible clickable sections.

  • Quick access to the most frequently used settings actions will be prominently displayed on the Profiles page, the very first page users encounter when entering Edge Settings. Clicking the relevant button will take users directly to that setting’s location.
  • Immediate access to commonly used actions within densely populated Settings pages (like Privacy, Search and Services, Appearance, Cookies and Site Permissions, System, and Performance) is now available for easier navigation. Users can click the button associated with any setting to be directed straight to its location.
  • For these dense settings pages, each section will now function as a clickable “table of contents” with descriptive subtexts to help users efficiently locate settings without unnecessary scrolling.

What are your thoughts on these updates?
