Microsoft Delays Announcement of Windows 11 24H2 Release Date, Coming Soon
Headlines claiming that “Windows 11 24H2 is set to release next week” have been circulating, but Microsoft has refuted these claims, clarifying that Windows 11 24H2 will not be released next week.
This doesn’t necessarily mean the update has been postponed. Windows 11 24H2 was initially expected to launch in late September or early October.
Microsoft has yet to provide an official release date for Windows 11 24H2. When inquired about the timing, company representatives stated that it would be available “later this year.” While this response is somewhat ambiguous, it is the information currently available from Microsoft.
So, why are people convinced the feature update will arrive next week? The speculation stems from a blog post by Microsoft discussing updates to Microsoft Copilot for enterprise users. The wording in this post suggested that Windows 11 24H2 might be released on September 24.
However, Microsoft has since revised the blog post to clarify this misunderstanding.
In the initial version of the blog, Microsoft noted: “The shift to the Microsoft 365 app as the entry point for Microsoft Copilot will align with the annual Windows 11 feature update release.”
Additionally, they mentioned:
“Changes will be rolled out to managed PCs starting with the optional non-security preview release on September 24, 2024, followed by the monthly security update release on October 8 for all supported versions of Windows 11. These changes will be implemented on Windows 10 PCs in the following month. This update will replace the current Copilot experience in Windows.”
Some assumed that the phrase “align with the annual Windows 11 feature update release” was a reference to Windows 11 24H2. The context further implied that the second quote indicated a September 24 release date for Windows 11 24H2.
However, Microsoft has updated their blog post with a clarification.
“The dates mentioned below pertain to our regular monthly servicing updates for supported versions of Windows 11 and are unrelated to when Windows 11, version 24H2 will be generally available,” Microsoft stated in their blog update.
This latest “editor’s note” suggests that the blog originally referenced dates associated with the regular Windows updates that typically occur in the last week of each month, and not a new Windows version.
The dates mentioned relate to the “optional non-security preview release” and the “monthly security update” , which are standard at this point in each month.
There is still a possibility that Windows 11 24H2 might launch in the upcoming weeks, potentially in early October, around the first Patch Tuesday of the month.
