Microsoft Announces End of Support for Windows 11 Mail & Calendar on December 31, 2024

Over the past six months, Microsoft has been actively promoting the transition to the web-based version of Outlook for Windows 11 through persistent notifications in the Mail & Calendar applications. However, it’s now confirmed that these native apps will cease to function as of December 31, 2024.

As noted by Windows Latest in a support document, Microsoft has clarified that users will lose the ability to send or receive emails via the Mail and Calendar applications. Reports suggest that either Outlook will refuse connection requests from these apps or an impending update will render them inoperable.

Concerned about your locally stored emails, calendar events, and contacts in the Mail & Calendar apps? Microsoft has assured users that there will be an “Export”feature available to facilitate the transfer of all emails, contacts, and events.

Moreover, during this required transition, Microsoft will allow users to transfer their Mail & Calendar app data directly into the new Outlook.

“Support for Windows Mail, Calendar, and People will conclude on December 31, 2024,” a Microsoft spokesperson reiterated in the support document. “We are actively migrating current users to the new Outlook for Windows,” they stated when prompted for more details.

While I hold a fondness for Windows and Microsoft, my critique of the new Outlook app is noteworthy; it simply mirrors a web-based version that falls short of the quality offered by the Mail & Calendar apps or the legacy Outlook software.

The new Outlook experience is disappointing, and Microsoft may need to reconsider its approach.
