Microsoft Acknowledges Windows 11 24H2 Problems Causing Game Breakdowns, Suspends Update for Additional PCs

Windows 11 version 24H2 has come under scrutiny due to a significant bug affecting gaming performance. Reports indicate that certain setups are experiencing inaccurate color representation in games. According to findings shared by Windows Latest, this color issue extends beyond gaming, with users noting that the vibrant hues on their Windows 11 displays are compromised until they disable the “Automatically manage color for apps”feature.

Moreover, a broader range of gaming problems has been identified by numerous users after updating to Windows 11 24H2. In an update to the support documentation, Microsoft acknowledged that this bug adversely affects color accuracy in games, particularly when the AutoHDR function is enabled.

For those unfamiliar, Auto HDR is a feature introduced in Windows 11 designed to automatically improve the visual quality of games by transforming Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) content into High Dynamic Range (HDR). SDR typically represents the standard visual output, whereas HDR delivers enhanced visuals with more depth and detail.

Unfortunately, the 24H2 update disrupts the functionality of Auto HDR.

Not only does it lead to inaccurate color rendering, but it also causes certain applications to crash.

As noted in the supporting documentation, “You might also observe that some games stop responding.” Microsoft further explained, “After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, you might encounter gaming issues if Auto HDR is activated on your device.”

This situation resonates with my experience; I found that Call of Duty crashed on my system without any helpful error messages in the logs, even in the Event Viewer.

Now, it appears I’ve identified the possible reason: Auto HDR may be responsible for the crashes experienced by some games on Windows 11.

Auto HDR Causing Game Crashes in Windows 11 24H2, Update Suspended

Microsoft has issued an alert for users who utilize the HDR feature on Windows 11. It’s advisable to either disable Auto HDR or refrain from installing the Windows 11 24H2 update altogether.

Windows Latest has also uncovered an older thread on Reddit that discussed a perplexing bug leading to sudden game crashes.

One user shared their experience with Windows 11 24H2: “In Call Of Duty Infinite Warfare, I got stuck on the loading screen. Other titles, including Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Origins, Far Cry, and Need for Speed Unbound, are also malfunctioning and simply crashing. This issue seems to be affecting multiple players,” they reported.

Microsoft recognizes that some users may be unaware that Auto HDR is active on their PCs, resulting in the company temporarily blocking the upgrade for systems with Auto HDR enabled.

Users will not be able to access the Windows 11 version 24H2 update with Auto HDR active. Microsoft advises against manually forcing the installation of this year’s major update, and using Media Creation or Windows 11 ISO files is discouraged unless Auto HDR is disabled.

If you’re looking to resolve these issues and enjoy gaming on Windows 11 24H2, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Settings > System > Display, then select Graphics.
  2. Disable Auto HDR for all games.

Additionally, it’s important to highlight that Windows 11 24H2 is not without its other challenges, which include a bug that causes the mouse cursor to disappear, performance drops, the File Explorer menu displaying improperly, and several other glitches.
