Issues with Windows 11 24H2 KB5046617 Update: Installation Errors and More
The release of Windows 11 24H2 was anticipated to enhance the user experience through the latest cumulative updates; however, many users are experiencing setbacks. A significant number have reported difficulties with Windows 11 KB5046617, encountering various error messages during installation. Adding to this, even those who managed to install the November 2024 Patch Tuesday update are facing serious challenges.
Reports from Windows Latest indicate that a subset of users is encountering a “Get a newer version of Windows” error on Windows 11 23H2 following update KB5046633. While that particular issue was somewhat contained to version 23H2, Windows 11 24H2 is not without its own set of problems stemming from KB5046617. At the forefront is the failure to install this patch or unresponsiveness from Windows Update.
The installation of Windows 11 KB5046617 often fails due to error codes 0x800f0991 and 0x800f0922, which provide no clear indication of the underlying problem. Moreover, users may find that the update process halts at 37% or 40%, subsequently resulting in error messages.
One frustrated user shared, “I am unable to install update KB5046617 for Windows 11 24H2. The installation perpetually fails at 35% with error code 0x800f0922. I’ve gone through various troubleshooting steps.”
Another user reported similar frustrations: “I attempted to stop services and rename the Windows Update folders before restarting the services and retrying the installation, but it still failed. The update reaches 35% before failing again with the error 0x800f0922.”
As previously mentioned, the frustrating aspect of these errors is the lack of clarity regarding the cause and how to resolve them for the mandatory November 2024 Patch Tuesday update.
Windows Update will persist in trying to install the update, irrespective of your preferences. While it is possible to pause updates, this action is generally discouraged.
In our experiments, we found that installation issues can sometimes be circumvented by manually downloading updates as. msu files from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Challenges Associated with Windows 11 KB5046617
It’s worth noting that KB5046617 was intended to resolve the persistent Alt-Tab issue in Windows 11 24H2, but this doesn’t seem to be entirely successful for all users.
Windows Latest found that the Alt-Tab feature no longer presents a black or blank screen when toggling between applications or games for most users; however, some still experience the problem.
Additionally, there have been complaints regarding HDR in gaming contexts, where colors may appear excessively bright or exhibit a reddish hue. Another significant yet isolated issue reported in Windows 11’s 24H2 November Patch is random system crashes during gameplay.
Here’s a compilation of problems identified with Windows 11 KB5046617 by several users; please note that these cases are relatively isolated and not indicative of widespread issues:
- Intermittent performance problems and Blue Screens of Death (BSOD).
- Icons on the taskbar disappearing after waking the system from sleep or rebooting. Windows Latest has substantiated this issue, alongside a bug where the File Explorer menu opens unexpectedly on the opposite side.
- USB devices connected via hubs ceasing to function after updates.
- Certain Lenovo laptops experiencing keyboard and touchpad glitches post-update, remedied by disabling Fast Startup.
- File Explorer and desktop icons being incorrectly resized.
Other bugs are present as well, but Windows Latest believes that the above-listed issues impact a broader user base than others.
