Introducing the “Settings Scheduler” Feature for Windows 11 PowerToys: A Highly Useful Tool
PowerToys for Windows 11 is set to enhance automation capabilities, particularly through a feature known as Settings Scheduler. This tool will allow users to automate settings such as enabling or disabling Wi-Fi based on a timer. For instance, you can configure dark mode to activate automatically at specific times.
This concept was introduced by developer Joseph Finner, who has previously contributed to other PowerToys functionalities. Rather than being a complex utility, Settings Scheduler aims to simplify the use of Task Scheduler by allowing you to adjust Windows settings on a predetermined schedule.
The screenshot showcases the ability to switch on dark mode during designated time frames.
For example, you can set PowerToys to activate dark mode at 7 PM and revert to light mode at 6 or 7 AM. The timing flexibility is entirely customizable according to user preference.
Here are some additional setting examples you can automate:
- Disable Bluetooth for two hours.
- Turn off Wi-Fi for two hours.
- Keep a setting active for 8 hours.
- Enable dark mode at 8 PM.
- Mute the volume to 0% in the morning.
- Keep the screen on for a certain duration.
This feature will allow you to manage Wi-Fi access efficiently, such as turning it on during late hours or keeping it off for the rest of the day.
This automation is particularly beneficial for users who primarily rely on Ethernet for work and want Windows to seamlessly transition to Wi-Fi when returning home.
Similarly, you can automate your laptop’s audio settings, such as muting speakers in the morning and increasing the volume later in the day.
While this functionality is reminiscent of Task Scheduler, where users can create PowerShell scripts to manage Wi-Fi operations at specific times, Settings Scheduler aims to streamline this process into a single tool, minimizing the need for multiple scripts.
Joseph Finney mentioned that “triggers could create more complex scenarios,” like changing settings upon connecting to certain Wi-Fi networks or arriving at specific locations, potentially introducing features akin to an “Awake v2” scenario, as noted in a GitHub post highlighted by Windows Latest.
The feature will be easily accessible directly from the taskbar or PowerToys menu.
Alongside settings automation, PowerToys will also introduce the Sysinternals ZoomIt tool in an upcoming update.
