How to Fix ‘This Partition is Too Small’ Error When Installing Windows
When carrying out a Clean Installation of Windows, it’s essential to choose a hard drive partition for the installation. This partition should be empty; otherwise, the installation process will not proceed. You can format the chosen partition during the Windows installation as well. However, some users have encountered the This partition is too small error during installation, despite formatting the intended hard drive partition.
The “Partition is Too Small”Error During Windows Installation
If you see the message “This partition is too small. Make the size of this partition at least 10507 MB or select another partition” while installing Windows, follow these steps to resolve the issue:
- Are you selecting the correct partition?
- Clean the partition
- Your SSD or HDD may be faulty
Before proceeding, verify that the selected partition has sufficient space for the Windows installation.
1] Are You Selecting the Correct Partition?
Ensure you are choosing the right partition. If your SSD or HDD displays multiple partitions, select the Primary Partition. You will see the available space on each partition while installing Windows. Choosing a partition with limited space in MB (such as the System Reserved partition) will trigger this error.
If all partitions on your SSD or HDD are empty, you may delete all existing partitions and then continue with the Windows installation. To delete partitions, select them one by one and click Delete. After deleting, you will be left with one hard drive partition that shows as Unallocated Space. Click New to create new partitions, then select the Primary partition to install Windows.
2] Clean the Partition
Exit the Windows installation screen and return to the initial Windows installation setup. Press Shift + F10 to open the Command Prompt.
Input the following commands, pressing Enter after each line:
Diskpart
list disk
select disk #
cleanExit
In the above command, # represents the Disk number. Make sure to enter the correct disk number for the hard drive partition where you intend to install Windows.
3] Your SSD or HDD May Be Faulty
If you are unable to install Windows due to the error or your hard drive isn’t showing the full capacity, it may be malfunctioning. In this case, you will need to send your laptop for repair or consider purchasing a new SSD or HDD.
We hope this information proves helpful.
How Do I Change the Partition Size When Installing Windows?
During a Clean Installation of Windows, you have the option to create multiple partitions on your hard drive. Simply click on the New option and specify the size of the primary partition. Repeat this step to create additional partitions. However, if your Windows OS is corrupted and requires reinstallation, you will not be able to adjust the partition size during the installation as this could lead to formatting other existing partitions.
Why Can’t I Install Windows on the Selected Partition?
There can be several reasons for being unable to install Windows on the chosen hard drive partition. Issues such as errors or bad sectors on the hard disk might hinder the installation process. Additionally, if the selected partition is lacking the necessary space for installation, Windows won’t install successfully.
