How to Fix Incorrect Badge Displaying Unread Messages When All Are Read
The badge notifications that appear on individual app icons are incredibly useful for grabbing users’ attention quickly. However, this feature may raise concerns when incorrect notification badges appear on the app icons. Fortunately, we’re here to discuss effective solutions to resolve this issue.
What Are Badge Notifications and Why Do Incorrect Badges Show Unread Messages?
Badge notifications, such as the numbered ones on the Messages app, indicate the count of unread messages you have not yet checked. With just a quick glance at your screen, you can easily identify how many messages are unread. While this enhances user experience, issues like incorrect badge notifications can detract from that experience.
Like any other system, badge notifications are not flawless. For instance, the system may not recognize if you’ve read messages directly from the Notification Center or lock screen. Instead, the Messages app continues to count those as ‘unread’, leading to inflated unread message counts.
Fix 1 – Use Siri to Read Your Messages
The simplest way to resolve this is by asking Siri to read all your unread messages and letting your iPhone be for a while. Once Siri has read through all the messages, the badge count on the Messages app will disappear.
Step 1 – Press and hold the Power button for a few seconds to bring up the Siri interface on your screen.
Alternatively, you can say “Hey Siri!” to activate Siri.
Step 2 – Speak the following prompt to Siri:
Hey Siri! Read all my messages.
This will prompt Siri to read aloud all unread messages from each conversation one-by-one.
If listening to all these messages is not preferable, simply put your device on silent mode and let it be for a few minutes. The duration Siri takes to read all messages varies depending on how many unread ones you have.
Fix 2 – Individually Read the Messages
You can also manually go through each unread conversation if you prefer not to use Siri and have a manageable number of messages. This is an excellent option to ensure accuracy.
Step 1 – Launch the Messages app.
Step 2 – Unread conversations will have a blue dot next to their header. Open any of these conversations.
Step 3 – Read through all the messages within the list of unread conversations.
Once you verify that no conversations show a blue dot, the incorrect badge count will be resolved.
