How to Fix Greyed Out Apps on iPhone: Steps to Remove

If you notice a greyed out, non-functional app icon with the ‘Waiting’ tag on your Home Screen, it can be frustrating, especially if you’re unable to uninstall the app from your iPhone or iPad directly. Fortunately, there are several effective methods to resolve this issue.

Why can’t I remove these greyed out apps from my iPhone?

Greyed out apps can appear as a result of offloaded apps on your Home Screen or App Library. In such instances, you may simply delete the app directly from your device. However, if the app is synced with iCloud, it might remain greyed out and non-functional. Additionally, if your device is managed through an integrated management portal like Jamf, the app icons seen on your iPad or iPhone are pushed through App Policy, and we provide a solution for that scenario.

Fix 1 – Delete the App from Settings

Instead of the usual method of deleting apps from the Home Screen, you can attempt to delete the app through the iPhone Settings.

Step 1 – Start by opening the Settings menu.

Step 2 – Navigate to the “General” category.

Step 3 – On this page, select “iPhone Storage.”

Step 5 – Once you select the app, tap “Delete App” to remove it.

After following these steps, the greyed out app should no longer appear on your screen. If the app remains, consider the next fix.

Fix 2 – Allow the app to download

The app may still be in the process of downloading. To resolve this, follow these steps:

Step 1 – Open the App Store.

Step 2 – Tap your profile image to view the list of apps.

Step 3 – Check the Updates section for the app in question to see if it has a small icon next to it.

Step 4 – Tap the app to restart the download.

Step 5 – After that, press the same cloud icon to stop the download process.

Once you return to the Home Screen, the greyed out app icon should be gone.

Fix 3 – Exclude the device from App Policy

If your iPad or iPhone is managed by a device management system (DMS), consult your administrator to exclude the affected device from the Apple Install Policy.

Step 1 – Navigate to the App Install Policy module.

Step 2 – Exclude the iPad experiencing the issue.

With this action, the iPad should automatically uninstall the greyed out app.

Step 3 – After the app is removed, return to the App Install Policy module and revoke the exclusion to allow the app to download and install again automatically.

We hope these solutions will help you resolve the issue with greyed out apps on your iPhone or iPad!
