How to Easily Join and Leave a Slack Workspace

Understanding how to exit a Slack workspace is essential for optimizing your app interface. If you are managing a Slack workspace, this knowledge will also enhance your member management capabilities.

How to Leave a Slack Workspace

Whether you are transitioning to one of the various Slack alternatives or simply no longer need a specific workspace, leaving a Slack workspace is straightforward. Start by accessing the workspace you wish to leave.

Once you’re in the workspace, click on your profile icon and select Profile.

Select Profile In Slack Workspace

When the Profile window appears on the right side, click on the icon with three vertical dots.

Select Account settings, which will redirect you to the Slack website.

Scroll down to find and select Deactivate your account.

Before deactivating your account, Slack will prompt you for confirmation. When prompted, select Yes, deactivate my account.

Keep in mind, you can only deactivate your Slack account if you are not the owner of the workspace.

How to Remove a User From a Slack Workspace

As part of creating and managing your Slack workspace, you may need to remove members who are no longer affiliated with your organization. The process is quite simple, and here’s how you can do it.

First, click on your Slack workspace icon or initials. When the dropdown appears, go to Tools & settings and expand the menu.

Select Manage members.

Click the horizontal three-dot icon next to the account you wish to remove and select Deactivate account.

How to Exit a Slack Group Within a Workspace

I have exited several Slack groups in the past to keep my communications organized, as they no longer served my purposes. To leave a Slack group, navigate to the group you wish to exit.

Once there, right-click (Windows) or press Ctrl + trackpad (Mac) while hovering over the group’s name, then select Leave channel.

Unlike the account deactivation process, you won’t receive a confirmation prompt when leaving a group.

What to Expect When Leaving a Slack Workspace

Upon leaving a Slack workspace, your account will be deactivated, but not permanently deleted unless performed by an administrator. Your files and messages remain accessible, allowing you to pick up where you left off if you choose to rejoin.

Regardless of whether you left the workspace voluntarily or were removed, rejoining requires the reactivation of your account by someone with the appropriate permissions. This is typically a quick resolution after contacting the workspace administrator, especially if you are part of a free Slack workspace for networking or work-related purposes.

If you belong to other Slack workspaces, your account in those locations will remain active (unless an admin takes action). As a frequent user of Slack in my freelance work, this was one of my primary concerns; fortunately, it’s nothing to worry about if you find yourself in a similar situation.

The process of leaving a Slack workspace or removing a user from it is uncomplicated. Moreover, you can reactivate accounts later, allowing you to resume activities seamlessly. Additionally, exploring various Slack commands can enhance your productivity significantly.
