Microsoft Word is a word processing platform used to write reports but is very versatile due to its variety of features. There are features that users can use to insert graphics, such as pictures, Shapes, Icons, Charts, and SmartArt. Users would use these to insert graphics in their documents or on a brochure or greeting card they are creating. In this tutorial, we will explain how to customize icons in Word. Icons are like symbols.

How to customize Icons in Word

Follow the steps below to customize icons in Microsoft Word.

  1. Launch Microsoft Word.
  2. Click the Insert tab, then click the Icons button.
  3. Select an icon, then click Insert.
  4. Click the Graphic Format tab and click the Convert to Shape button.
  5. Click any of the shapes within the icon, then click the Shape Format tab.
  6. Click the Shape Fill button in the Shape Styles group.
  7. You can also customize the outlines of the shapes and add effects to them.

Launch Microsoft Word.

Click the Insert tab, then click the Icons button.

Select an icon, then click Insert.

The icon is inserted into the document.

If you want to move the icon anywhere on the document. Right-click the icon, hover the cursor over Wrap, and select Behind text from the context menu.

To break the icon into pieces. Click the Graphic Format tab and click the Convert to Shape button.

The icon is now converted to shapes.

So, you can click on each shape with the icon and customize them.

To add colors to the icon, click any of the shapes within the icon, then click the Shape Format tab.

Click the Shape Fill button in the Shape Styles group.

You will see that the color has changed.

You can also customize the outlines of the shapes and add effects to them.

If you want to add color between the lines of the shape, follow these steps:

Select the shape. On the Shape Format tab, in the Shapes gallery, select Freeform: Shape.

While drawing the shape, click each time.

Place the shape on the area between the icon lines you want to color.

Remove the outline of the freeform shape by clicking the Shape Outline button on the Shape Format tab and selecting No Outline.

Click Shape Fill to add color.

Now group the Freeform shape with the icon.

The icon is customized.
