Guide to Enable and Utilize Rewrite AI in Notepad on Windows 11

Rewrite leverages an Azure cloud service for processing text, ensuring output is generated without retaining any user data, thereby maintaining your privacy and confidentiality. Currently, this feature is in preview mode and is available exclusively for Windows 11 Insider users located in the United States, UK, Canada, France, and Italy. New users will receive 50 credits to start using the service. Additionally, users in regions such as Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, or Taiwan, possessing either a Copilot Pro, Microsoft 365 Personal, or Family subscription, can also utilize AI credits for Rewrite in Notepad.

Activating Rewrite AI in Notepad

If you’re located in a region not initially supported, you can still enable Rewrite in Notepad on your Windows 11 device by following these straightforward steps:

  1. Press Win+I to launch the Windows 11 Settings app.
  2. Select Time & language > Language & region.
  3. Change the Country or region setting to United States or another supported country listed earlier.
  4. Ensure that the Notepad app is updated to its latest version.
  5. Log out and back into your computer.

Now, you can open Windows Notepad and sign in with your Microsoft account. Look for the Rewrite icon in the upper right corner, adjacent to your profile icon.

If you don’t see the Rewrite icon, navigate to the Windows Notepad Settings and locate the AI Features section. Here, you will find the Rewrite option, which you can toggle on or off.

Utilizing Rewrite in Notepad on Windows 11

To begin, either open an existing text document or create a new TXT file. Click on the Rewrite button located in the toolbar; you will encounter the following intuitive options:

  • Rewrite: This option allows you to rephrase the entire document. Alternatively, you can use the Ctrl+I keyboard shortcut.
  • Make shorter
  • Make longer
  • Change tone: Adjust the tone to be more Formal, Inspirational, Casual, Humorous, or Persuasive.
  • Change format: Modify the text into List mode, Paragraph, Business, Marketing, Academic, or Poetry formats.

Select your desired text and leverage these options based on your rewriting needs. Additionally, you can access these functions via the right-click context menu in Notepad.

Each time you select an option, one AI credit will be deducted, activating the rewriting process, which typically completes within seconds.

A pop-up window will appear, which can be repositioned anywhere on your screen for convenience. In this window, various rewritten text options will be displayed. You can choose the one that suits you best and click the Replace button to incorporate that version into your document.

You also have the option to highlight specific text and copy it to your clipboard. While there’s no feature to modify a particular version directly, you can utilize the Length, Tone, and Format settings for additional rewriting. Adjust these as necessary and utilize the Try again icon to recapitulate the process. Remember, each rewriting attempt consumes one AI credit.

In addition to customization choices, the pop-up allows you to use Copy and Discard options. You will also find an icon indicating the remaining credits in the lower right corner. To close the pop-up, simply select the Discard icon and you can initiate another rewriting attempt.

That wraps it up! I hope this guidance proves useful.
