Google to Limit Notifications for Messages in Google Chat Spaces: How to Adjust Settings

Google is updating the way you receive alerts for messages coming through in Google Chat Spaces. Previously, you could get notifications for messages in threads within Spaces, even those you didn’t follow. Now, new configuration options have been introduced for customizing your notifications.

With the implementation of these new notification choices, the default setting for Spaces notifications has shifted to ‘Main conversations’. This encompasses messages in main chats and responses to threads you are following. However, if you wish to be notified about every message and thread as they arrive, you’ll need to manually adjust your settings. Here’s how to change your notification preferences in a Google Chat space:

1. Launch the Google Chat application and enter the space you want to modify the notifications for.
   
2. Select the title of the space located at the top.
   
3. Navigate to Notifications.
   
4. You can also click on the three-dot icon next to the space and choose Notifications.
   
5. You will see four options offered here. The default setting allows notifications only for ‘Main conversations’. To receive notifications for every message and thread, select All.
   
6. Don’t forget to click Save to apply your changes.
