Fix Copilot Error When Attempting to Reconnect: 4 Effective Solutions

A significant number of users have faced the Copilot Error indicating a reconnection attempt, which can render the service completely unusable. Fortunately, this concern is typically easy to resolve, and in this guide, we will walk you through the necessary steps to fix it.

What causes the Copilot to persistently try to reconnect?

This issue can arise due to an active VPN or problems related to browser cache.

How can I resolve the Copilot reconnection error?

Before delving into solutions, verify that your browser is set to the appropriate region. If it appears incorrect, adjustments in settings may be required. Switching to the Edge browser can also be beneficial.

1. Turn off your VPN or adjust its settings

  1. Disconnect the VPN if it’s currently on. You can exit it by right-clicking the system tray icon and selecting Quit.
  2. If you’re utilizing Nord VPN, turn off the Web Protection or URL Trimmer feature.

  3. It’s recommended to disable the Kill Switch in NordVPN as a potential fix for this problem.
    kill switch off
  4. Including r.bing.com in your list of exceptions for VPN connection hostnames might also be useful.

In some cases, users found complete removal of their VPN, as seen with Cisco AnyConnect, necessary to resolve the issue.

2. Refresh the page and wipe the Bing cache

  1. Access Bing and log out of your account.
    sign out bing
  2. Press Ctrl + F5 to refresh, or alternatively, hold Ctrl while clicking the Refresh button.
  3. Once the page reloads, log back into your account.

3. Manually clear your cache

  1. Open the Bing website in your browser.
  2. Press F12 to open Developer Tools.
  3. Navigate to the Storage tab.

  4. Find Cookies, expand it, right-click on bing.com, and select Delete All.
    delete all bing
  5. Hit Ctrl + F5 afterwards to refresh the page again.
  6. Log back into Copilot once more.

4. Additional solutions to consider

  1. Switch between your work and personal accounts to see if it helps.
  2. Attempt accessing Copilot through new URLs: https://m365.cloud.microsoft/chat/ or https://copilot.cloud.microsoft/

If the Copilot is showing a message about attempting to reconnect in Edge or another browser, the issue likely stems from cookies. Consider clearing them to see if that resolves the problem.
