Exploring the AI-Powered Generative Erase Feature in Windows 11 Paint App

Microsoft has skillfully integrated artificial intelligence into a variety of native applications on Windows 11. One significant enhancement occurred last year when Paint introduced “Cocreator,”a feature designed for AI-driven image generation.

Subsequently, the company rebranded the feature to “Image Creator,”while the Cocreator function became exclusive to Copilot+ devices. Currently, Microsoft is testing two new features, namely Generative Erase and Fill, within the Insider program.

The functionality of these features is straightforward. The Generative Fill uses AI models to incorporate new elements into an existing image. By selecting a specific area and inputting a simple request such as “add a cat,” the tool will seamlessly make that addition.

On the other hand, the Generative Erase feature identifies the selected area, removes it, and blends it with surrounding colors, creating the effect that nothing was ever there.

These features do not have a dedicated submenu. Instead, they become accessible once you select an area of the image using the selection tool.

We have installed the most recent version of Paint, which includes both new functionalities (version 11.2410.28.0), but please note that these features are exclusive to users in the Windows 11 Canary and Dev Insider channels. The Generative Fill feature is solely available on Copilot+ Insider PCs, while the Erase option is operable on all devices participating in the Insider Program.

As we do not have access to a Copilot+ PC, our testing focused on the Generative Erase feature using our AMD system. We were impressed by its performance, as it efficiently removed objects from images without any noticeable lag.

One advantage is that the feature operates offline, alleviating concerns about daily credit limitations similar to what is experienced with the Image Creator feature. It’s likely that the Generative Fill follows the same principle, leveraging local AI models to quickly generate images on Copilot+ PCs.

It’s important to mention that while the Erase function is new to Paint, it has existed in the Photos app for a while, having gone through numerous name changes before Microsoft settled on “Generative Erase.”

This clarification is beneficial, as it reduces potential confusion and provides users with a consistent naming convention for similar features.

How to Utilize the Generative Fill and Erase Features in Paint for Windows 11

To access these features, start by selecting the corresponding tool from the menu. Choose either the “Rectangle” or “Free-form” selection option. After that, drag the cursor over the area of the image you wish to modify.

Upon selection, you will see icons for “Fill” and “Erase” alongside the “Background Remover” icon. Click the Fill icon and type in the description of the element you want to add. Afterward, hit the Create button to generate the image using the AI models stored locally.

If you are pleased with the results, select the Keep option to save your edits. If not, click the retry icon to attempt another generation and explore different design options.

Next, we explored the Generative Erase feature, which does not require a Copilot+ PC to function. We highlighted a section of the image and clicked the Erase icon, which successfully removed the watermark from the Insider build, blending it with the background effortlessly.

You can also use the tool with the Eraser function. Select the Eraser option from the menu, where you will find the same Erase icon available on the left.

Adjust the brush size using the slider and drag it to highlight the desired area. The feature will automatically clean and blend the section. Click Apply to confirm your edits.

Projected Release of Features

The Generative Fill feature is still in the testing phase within the Insider channel and will be available only for Copilot+ Snapdragon devices initially. However, Microsoft is planning to extend accessibility to additional AI-enabled PCs from Intel and AMD in the future.

You don’t need to wait for Generative Erase, as it has already been part of the Windows Photos app since the Windows 11 23H2 update.

As for the Paint version, it might take a little longer to reach your device, so use the Photos app if you need immediate photo editing capabilities.
