Exploring ChatGPT AI Integration in Windows 11’s New Notepad App
It’s finally here! In February, Windows Latest shared that Microsoft aimed to integrate Copilot AI into Notepad, enabling users to leverage generative AI while crafting content on Windows 11. With the latest preview update, this AI functionality is being introduced to testers, although not everyone will have access immediately.
This new feature, known as “Rewrite in Notepad,”allows users to enhance their existing text rather than generating content from the ground up. The primary function of this “Rewrite”tool is to polish or enhance current drafts, with Microsoft developers noting that it operates using “an advanced AI model referred to as GPT.”
It’s uncertain whether this “GPT”model denotes ChatGPT specifically, but it’s reasonable to assume that it does. With the Rewrite feature in Notepad, users can adjust the wording of sentences and modify their tone to make them appear more formal, casual, inspirational, or amusing. Additionally, the formatting of the text can be altered.
Users can choose between maintaining the default style or transforming their text into various formats, including prose, lists, business layouts, academic styles, marketing pitches, or even poetry.
At Windows Latest, we thoroughly test features before presenting them in articles, and I personally explored the AI Rewrite functionality in Notepad. I found it to be exceptionally useful—with performance that exceeded expectations.
Now, let’s delve deeper into the workings of the AI within Notepad and understand the behind-the-scenes processes.
Exploring AI Rewrite in Notepad on Windows 11
To start, the AI rewrite feature in Notepad is currently accessible exclusively to testers enrolled in the Canary and Dev channels of the Windows Insider Program. This feature is limited to users in the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany, and Canada.
To utilize AI in Notepad, signing into a Microsoft account is a prerequisite. This feature necessitates authentication and processes your content via Azure.
Microsoft reassured users, stating, “The online service does not retain the text or generated content after processing, ensuring your personal data remains secure and private.”
Additionally, Microsoft manages the use of the feature through a “Credits”system. Should you exhaust your credits, a subscription to Copilot Pro will be necessary.
According to a Microsoft representative, “AI credits reset on the first of each month,”as mentioned in Windows Latest.
If the upgraded Notepad experience doesn’t appear for you yet, checking for updates is advisable, though Microsoft indicated that the feature is not broadly available at this time.
How to Utilize the ChatGPT “Rewrite” Feature in Notepad for Windows 11
To begin using the AI rewrite feature, start by typing your content and select the text that you would like the AI to modify. For instance, I wrote a brief essay on dogs and highlighted everything except the first sentence, then clicked the Rewrite button available on the toolbar.
Upon clicking the Rewrite button, you will see a variety of options:
- Rewrite
- Make shorter
- Make longer
- Change tone
- Change format
When selecting “Change Tone,” you’ll have the following choices:
- Default
- Formal
- Casual
- Inspirational
- Humor
For “Change Format,” the options available include:
- Default
- Paragraph
- List
- Business
- Academic
- Marketing
- Poetry
These selections are easy to understand, and if you ever feel unsure, they will be reiterated in a subsequent AI pop-up.
Our testing at Windows Latest revealed that the Notepad AI generates three distinct content variations. Each variant offers slight variations in wording, and the system’s prompts focus on altering specific terms.
You can navigate through these variations using the arrow keys. Once you find a version you prefer, you can finalize it or modify it further.
For instance, a “Length” button offers a dropdown menu allowing you to modify the text to be of comparable length, shorter, or longer. Additionally, there’s a “Tone” button with options for fine-tuning the tone of the content.
Moreover, a “Format” button (noted as “List” in the screenshot below) is also available.
When the rewritten text appears, a Replace button will allow you to substitute your original text with the new version if you’re satisfied with it.
You’ll see a star icon accompanied by a number (such as 46), indicating your remaining AI credit points. When your credits are depleted, expect delays in content generation.
Will More Copilot Features Arrive in Notepad on Windows 11?
Microsoft has quietly been testing AI integration in Notepad, as mentioned in a blog post from last month.
The company noted that subscribers to Microsoft 365 will receive AI credits usable for Copilot across various Office applications, including “Paint, Photos, and Notepad on Windows.”
The future of Copilot in Notepad remains uncertain, but it’s evident that Microsoft is heavily investing in AI capabilities within Windows 11, hoping to attract a larger subscriber base for Copilot Pro.
