Enhance Battery Life: Microsoft Integrates Windows 11 Energy Saver with Microsoft Edge
Microsoft has merged Edge Efficiency Mode with Windows Energy Saver to enhance battery life for users. This feature is automatically enabled in Edge Dev.
Microsoft Edge employs Efficiency Mode to decrease power consumption and conserve battery life, making it especially beneficial for laptop users. When activated, Efficiency Mode reduces power usage by optimizing computer resources and works in conjunction with Sleeping Tabs, placing inactive tabs to sleep after 30 minutes. However, enabling Efficiency Mode may result in videos playing less smoothly due to the need for additional steps to conserve energy.
Even if you haven’t turned on Edge Efficiency Mode, Windows 11 features its own Efficiency Mode within the power and battery settings to further enhance battery performance.
To access these settings, navigate to Start, then Settings, followed by System, and finally select Power. Here, you can tailor options such as screen brightness, screensaver, and sleep settings.
As mentioned in previous reports, Microsoft has investigated the integration of Edge Efficiency Mode and Windows Energy Saver mode for user advantage, and this integration is now live. The corresponding setting in Edge Dev is activated by default.
The new setting, found under Efficiency Mode in the Optimize Performance section, states, “Use Windows Energy Saver to control efficiency mode settings.”
When this setting is enabled, “Windows Energy Saver mode will automatically switch your device to Efficiency Mode to save energy. This feature activates only when Energy Saver mode is turned on in Windows Power and Battery settings.”
Clicking the link for “Windows Power and Battery settings” will navigate you to the Power Settings in Windows 11, where you can adjust power mode and energy saver parameters.
From our experience with the developer version, it appears that Edge may not require user approval to enable this feature. We have not set Energy Saver to activate by default, and it is being tested on a desktop computer.
In addition to the integration of Windows Energy Saver with Edge, Microsoft Edge is also trialing Picture-in-Picture (PiP) functionality in Taskbar media controls, a streamlined New Tab Page devoid of a News feed, and notifications to inform users when extensions are causing the browser to slow down.
