The September 2024 optional update for Windows 11 devices, known as KB5043145, is now available for download. This update introduces a new file-sharing feature within the Taskbar’s search box, enhances the user interface (UI) in specific settings app pages and the Start menu, and implements various tweaks to the lock screen’s design.

As this is an optional update, Microsoft will not automatically install it on your Windows 11 PC. Users can choose to install it to preview upcoming features that will be included in the next Patch Tuesday update. To check for this update, navigate to the Windows Update section in the Settings app and click on Check for updates.

If the update does not appear, you have the option to manually update your PC using Microsoft’s offline installer (.msu) file.

This update brings your PC to build 22631.4249. Before diving into the new features, let’s look at the download links.

What’s New in Windows 11 Build 22631.4249

With KB5043145, the functionality of the Taskbar search box has been upgraded. When searching for any file, you’ll notice a share option located in the right pane, eliminating the need to open File Explorer for sharing. Additionally, the Windows Share option has been removed from the search box.

An unexpected change has been made to the lock screen interface. Previously, if you locked your PC while music was playing, a mini control center would appear in the bottom right corner. This has now been centralized for a more cohesive design.

The Start menu’s account manager has been updated to place the Sign-out button prominently for easier access, reducing the need to search through the context menu for a quicker sign-out option.

You can also manage your Copilot Pro subscription directly on the Accounts page within the Settings app.

Finally, this update modernizes the Delivery Optimization Settings page to enhance usability. Many of these features will be rolled out gradually, so they may not be available to all users immediately.

The update also resolves several issues related to Task Manager and Edge, while no significant known issues have been reported at this time. Notably, the update has fixed the dual-boot SBAT bug.
