Project64 stands out as the premier emulator for Nintendo 64 games. While it’s not overly flashy, its interface has been updated for Windows 11, featuring rounded corners.

It’s important to note that this emulator does not include ROMs; you’ll need to obtain the games yourself and load them via File > Open ROM.

For testing purposes, we downloaded a Doom ROM from the EmulatorGames website.

The games operated smoothly, and there’s even an option to map your keyboard controls if you lack an N64 controller. Plus, it’s completely free!

2. RetroArch

RetroArch is a more advanced emulator capable of supporting various console cores, including multiple Nintendo 64 variants like Mupen64Plus-Next and ParaLLEI N64.

To begin using it, you’ll need to load a core. Fortunately, you can easily download a core directly within the app. Once that’s set, simply load your ROM, which for us, was the Doom ROM.

In around 30 seconds, we were immersed in the classic Doom gameplay. Additionally, it offers the capability to host servers for multiplayer games, provided the games support this feature.

RetroArch is packed with numerous configurations and settings. While we didn’t explore every option, it’s free to download, allowing you to dive into its features at your leisure. It operates seamlessly on Windows 11 too.

Nemu 64 is another straightforward emulator designed to recreate the Nintendo experience on your PC.

Although it appears to be somewhat neglected—lacking its own website—you can find it on third-party platforms, and it functions just fine, even with Windows 11.

The user interface is quite basic. After downloading and launching the application, select ROM to load your desired game. In mere seconds, we were slashing our way through monsters in Doom 64.

Not only is Nemu 64 user-friendly, but it also includes a multiplayer feature, allowing you to enjoy some games with friends. It’s free to use, but remember to source your own ROMs.
