A Comprehensive Guide to Importing, Exporting, and Cloning Virtual Machines in VMware Workstation

For IT administrators managing VMware Workstation, the tasks of importing, exporting, and cloning virtual machines (VMs) are common operations. These processes play a vital role in software deployment, network testing, and various other scenarios. In this guide, we will explore the steps for importing, exporting, and cloning VMs in VMware Workstation.

How to Export a Virtual Machine in VMware Workstation

Follow the steps below to successfully export a virtual machine in VMware Workstation:

  1. Ensure that the virtual machine is powered off.
  2. Initiate the export process to save the virtual machine as an OVF file.
  3. Designate a location to save the OVF file.

Launch VMware Workstation from the Start Menu. Expand your hosts, right-click on the virtual machine you wish to export, select Power from the menu, and then click on Power Off. Once the machine is completely powered down, select it, and navigate to File > Export to OVF. Choose your desired storage location and specify a suitable file name.

A progress bar will appear, indicating the status of the export process; please be patient as it might take some time to finish.

Importing a Virtual Machine in VMware Workstation

Now that you know how to export a virtual machine, let’s move on to the process of importing it. We will import the previously exported VM following these steps:

  1. Start VMware Workstation and initiate the creation of a new virtual machine.
  2. Locate the folder where the exported OVF file is saved.
  3. Import the OVF file into the VMware environment.

Open VMware Workstation, then go to File > Open, or use the shortcut Ctrl + O. Navigate to the directory containing your exported VM, such as Desktop > Exported VM, select the OVF file, and click Open.

This will launch the Import Virtual Machine wizard. Enter a name for your VM and specify a storage path. After confirming your selections, the import process will begin, and you will see a progress bar.

Wait until the import is complete, and your virtual machine will be visible in the VMware Workstation Library.

Cloning a Virtual Machine in VMware Workstation

Next, let’s learn how to clone a virtual machine.

Cloning involves creating a duplicate of an existing virtual machine, which can be beneficial for backup purposes, virtual machine deployment, and testing environments. There are two primary types of clones:

  • Full Clones: This type creates a virtual machine that operates independently of the parent machine. Any modifications to the parent VM will not impact the clone.
  • Linked Clones: This method shares a single virtual disk between the parent and the clone. Changes to either VM could affect the other due to their interdependence.

To clone a VM, follow these steps:

In VMware Workstation, right-click on the virtual machine you wish to clone, select Manage > Clone to initiate the Clone Virtual Machine Wizard, then click Next. If you have any existing snapshots, choose one, or opt for the default setting. On the Clone Method screen, select your preferred cloning type, enter a name for the new VM, and click Finish.

How to Export and Import a Virtual Machine in VMware

You can export a virtual machine as an OVF file, which can be transferred to another computer. By using this OVF file, you can import the machine into another instance of VMware Workstation, adding it to the Virtual Machine Library.

How to Clone a Virtual Machine in VMware Workstation?

To clone a virtual machine, right-click on the desired VM and select Manage > Clone. This action will open the Clone wizard, where you can follow the on-screen prompts to complete the cloning process.
