At the Microsoft Ignite 2024 event, the tech giant announced that it will be bringing a comprehensive version of Windows 11 to Meta Quest headsets. This initiative primarily focuses on the upcoming Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S models.
To create a virtual workstation in VR, users will need to connect their devices to either a physical PC or the Windows 365 cloud service. This setup enables the arrangement of multiple virtual monitors, allowing for a flexible workspace set in any environment.
A highlight of this new functionality is the introduction of Volumetric Apps, which allow Windows applications to be experienced in a 3D space. Users will be able to control these applications through hand movements while immersed in virtual reality.
The collaboration between Microsoft and Meta comes after Microsoft decided to reduce its focus on the HoloLens project. Both companies have a history of partnership, especially with Microsoft Teams and Office applications available on Quest devices.
The public preview for Meta Quest 3 users will commence in December 2024. This enhancement paves the way for utilizing VR not only for gaming but also for various professional tasks.
