Microsoft Temporarily Disables OCR Text Detection in Photos App

The recent update of the Photos app introduced an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) feature, enabling users to effortlessly copy text from images. Unfortunately, this functionality has now been temporarily disabled.

The removal of this feature was first noted by the well-known insider @phantomofearth, following an update to the latest version of the app in the Canary/Dev channels.

While the reasons for Microsoft’s decision remain unclear, it is evident that the company had been hinting at this feature for some time.

Numerous Windows users were eager to see the OCR capability in the Photos app, considering it one of the favored functions in an operating system that often receives criticism (the statistics speak for themselves). This suggests that the company likely decided to temporarily disable it to address some underlying issues, indicating that its absence might not be permanent.

The latest update for the Photos app in Canary/Dev (2024.11110.13009.0, with no confirmation for other channels) has seemingly disabled (or removed?) this feature.
