How to Turn Off Copilot Model Training for Your Microsoft Account on Windows 11
This guide will explain how to turn off Copilot Model training for your Microsoft account in Windows 10/11. By doing so, your exchanges with Copilot will not contribute to AI training and enhancement.
When using Copilot with your Microsoft account, your chat history is typically saved, and the Model training feature is activated to refine Copilot’s performance. Your interactions, including text and voice conversations, may be utilized for AI improvement. However, users located in the UK, European Economic Area (EEA), and other specified regions are exempt from having their data used. For users in other areas, opting out of the default Model training settings is possible if preferred.
Steps to turn off Copilot Model training on Windows 11
Follow these instructions to disable Copilot Model training for your Microsoft account on Windows 10/11:
- Launch either the Copilot desktop or web application and sign in with your Microsoft account if you haven’t already.
- Click on the Profile or Settings icon located in the upper-right corner of the app.
- Select your account name or email from the dropdown menu.
- Choose the Privacy option.
- In the Privacy Settings, disable the Model training feature. You may also want to turn off Personalization to prevent Copilot from using your chat history, Bing activities, etc., for a customized experience.
You also have the option to export or erase your Copilot activity history through the Privacy Settings, allowing you to manage your interaction data with the Copilot app.
If at any point you wish to re-enable AI training, simply follow the aforementioned steps and reactivate the Model training feature.
Disabling Copilot Model Training on Mobile Devices
For those using the Copilot app on Android or iOS and looking to disable Model training, here are the steps:
- Launch the Copilot mobile app.
- Tap on your Profile icon located in the upper-right corner.
- Select the Account option.
- Go to the Privacy section.
- Disable the Model Training toggle. Additionally, you can modify the Personalization setting if desired.
How to Turn Off Microsoft Copilot
If you want to deactivate Microsoft Copilot on a Windows device, access the Group Policy Editor. Then navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Copilot. Open the Turn off Windows Copilot option, select Enabled, and click OK to apply your changes. This action will prevent users from accessing Copilot on your Windows 10/11 machine. Alternatively, you can uninstall Copilot completely if it is not needed.
Removing Copilot from the Windows 11 Taskbar
Previously, to remove Copilot from the Windows 11 taskbar, you would navigate to the Settings app, go to Personalization, select Taskbar, expand the Taskbar items, and disable the Copilot button. However, since Copilot has transitioned to a standalone application, it is pinned to the taskbar by default. To remove it, simply right-click the Copilot icon and select Unpin from taskbar.
