Removing Unwanted Objects from Pictures Using AI in Paint on Windows 11
  • To eliminate elements from an image in Paint, begin by opening the file, selecting the “Eraser” tool, and utilizing the “Generative erase” feature to smartly remove undesired objects with AI technology.

In Windows 11, the Microsoft Paint application features a generative erase tool that makes it simple to erase unwanted elements from your images. This innovative tool employs AI to seamlessly fill the area where the object was removed, ensuring that the background blends perfectly with the rest of the image, effectively making it look as though the object had never existed.

If this concept seems familiar, it’s because it mirrors the functionality of the Magic Eraser found on Android devices. However, this capability is integrated directly into Paint, the image editing software that Microsoft released back in 1985. Additionally, this same feature is also present in the Photos app on both Windows 11 and 10.

This article is designed to guide you through the process of using the generative erase feature in Microsoft Paint for Windows 11 to remove objects from your images.

Using AI Generative Erase in Paint to Remove Unwanted Objects

Follow these steps to erase unwanted elements from your image using Microsoft Paint:

  1. Launch the Microsoft Paint application.

  2. Select File, then choose Open to upload the image you wish to edit.

  3. From the command bar, click on the Eraser tool.

  4. Choose the Generative erase option.

  5. Carefully highlight the object that you want to delete.

  6. Press the Apply button to confirm.

As an alternative, you can use the selection tool to outline the area you wish to remove, then click on the “Generative erase” option to delete it.

Once you’ve completed these steps, the AI will analyze the adjacent pixels and create a realistic background to replace the erased portion.

During my tests with this feature, I found that while it functions well, it isn’t flawless, as the AI occasionally attempts to reproduce parts of the image that weren’t initially present.

As of now, this feature is available to all users with Paint version 11.2410.28.0. To utilize it, you will need to have a device set up through the Canary or Dev Channel of the Windows Insider Program. This feature is expected to be rolled out to the stable channel soon.
