1. Google Maps
Cost: Free
Google Maps serves as an exceptional resource for discovering eats in unfamiliar areas. It displays various restaurants within your viewable map area, independent of your exact location. For instance, if you’re planning a visit to Amsterdam this weekend, you can search for restaurants in specific neighborhoods by simply navigating the map to that city.
To view dining options, just tap the Restaurant icon while looking at your desired location, and a list of nearby eateries, complete with ratings, will appear.
For additional details on each restaurant, tap their names to see opening hours, addresses, photos, and even menus when available. Plus, you can check user reviews to help decide if a particular restaurant is worth visiting.
2. Yelp
Cost: Free
Yelp is another widely-used app for uncovering the best local dining spots. Its repertoire isn’t limited to food; it also helps you find various services such as auto repairs, movers, and cleaning services.
Using your location, Yelp reveals nearby restaurants while allowing you to search for specific cuisines like burgers, Korean dishes, or Indian food if you have a particular craving. You can also apply numerous filters including Good for Kids, Open Now, and more.
A feature I enjoy is the Surprise Me option, perfect for those moments when you’re uncertain about where to dine, a frequent situation for me. The listings are comprehensive, including menus, operating hours, website links, phone numbers, visuals, and sometimes even the option to reserve or place an order.
3. TripAdvisor
Cost: Free
TripAdvisor is a trusted app for travel suggestions and booking essentials, and it also serves as a fantastic resource for discovering ideal dining options.
The app pinpoints your location and features a dedicated Looking for something nearby section to help you explore local dining options. Restaurant listings come complete with all the essential information, including operating hours, menus, reviews, and images. One standout aspect of TripAdvisor is its navigation information, showing you how to get to your chosen restaurant.
If you’re planning a vacation, TripAdvisor allows you to explore local dining options before arriving, so you can have your dining agenda sorted out ahead of time.
4. Restaurant Guru
Cost: Free
Restaurant Guru is an excellent tool for uncovering exciting new dining spots. It immediately utilizes your location to present the best local restaurants.
You can refine your search according to categories like Pizza, Fast Food, or Seafood. A unique feature of this app is its ability to showcase local dishes, ideal for when you’re in a foreign country or craving something specific, so be sure to explore the Dishes tab.
Restaurant Guru also lets you search for eateries in locations you’re not currently in, which is convenient. If your hunger level is high and you need immediate suggestions, the Best nearby feature will be a go-to. Listings provide comprehensive details, including average pricing and frequently mentioned keywords from reviews.
5. OpenTable
Cost: Free
As someone who prefers not to make phone reservations, I often rely on OpenTable to secure a spot at my preferred dining establishment.
With this app, you can search for dining options nearby or in other regions. The reservation feature is incredibly handy, enabling you to select a preferred time for your visit. Each restaurant entry provides essential information about the dining venue, including menus and reviews.
Another functionality I appreciate is the ability to discover options in specific city areas. For example, if you want to dine at San Giovanni Piazza in Florence, you can find available venues.
6. HappyCow
Cost: Free
While I’m not a strict vegetarian, I enjoy exploring vegetarian dishes as I aim to reduce my meat consumption. I’m a big fan of tofu and veggie spreads like cashew paste. HappyCow is an app that highlights vegan and vegetarian dining spots in your vicinity as well as those offering vegetarian options, ideal for diners with dietary needs.
The app offers the ability to search for vegetarian restaurants in different locations, making it helpful when you’re traveling. If you discover any excellent dining spots not listed, you have the option to add them yourself.
A major draw of HappyCow is its community feature, enabling you to connect with fellow vegetarian and vegan diners, sharing experiences and tips. Each restaurant listing contains reviews, photographs, and details about operating hours and social media links.
7. Local Food Delivery App
Cost: Free
You can also utilize your favorite food delivery app, such as Deliveroo or Uber Eats, to discover new local restaurants. Note that some establishments may only be available for delivery. Begin by entering your address to reveal nearby dining options. For instance, I’m currently using Bolt Food to illustrate this.
This app allows you to browse through various categories, including New on Bolt Food, Italian, Fast Food, and more. Each restaurant listing has a More info button to provide additional information regarding the restaurant’s physical location.
You can check their address, operating hours, and contact information.
If you’re inspired to recreate the dish you just enjoyed at home, explore these apps that can guide you in cooking.
