Windows 11 24H2 Update Issue: File Explorer Menu Appears Off-Screen

A particularly unusual glitch I observed following the Windows 11 24H2 update involved the mouse cursor vanishing when engaging with text input fields. However, there’s an even more peculiar issue at hand concerning File Explorer. Post-update, users may find the three-dot menu to be illegible when using File Explorer in full-screen mode.

Within Windows 11 File Explorer, the three dots—commonly known as the “See more” or “More options” menu—provide access to additional functionalities that aren’t directly visible on the toolbar. When these dots are clicked, a drop-down menu appears, revealing a variety of options that may change as you navigate through different sections of File Explorer.

For instance, you might encounter options such as connecting to a media server, adding a network location, mapping or unlinking a network drive, selecting all or no items, inverting item selection, and viewing properties or settings for File Explorer. Again, the options available in the “See more” menu may differ depending on where you open it.

Windows 11 File Explorer drop down menu bug

After the Windows 11 24H2 update, numerous users—including ourselves—have noted that the menu suddenly appears at the top of the screen instead of beneath the three dots. This issue persists regardless of whether File Explorer is in full-screen (maximized) or windowed mode, rendering the menu difficult to read in some instances.

The three dots menu, designed to present options directly beneath the button, now incorrectly positions itself at the top of the screen. Consequently, when in full-screen mode, the menu extends past the visible display area.

This positioning flaw makes accessing the File Explorer menu practically impossible, as it appears off-screen. To navigate this issue, users must switch to windowed mode. However, it’s essential to ensure that the window is sized sufficiently small to accommodate the three-dot menu.

I’m intrigued to learn how Microsoft misaligned the File Explorer menu. Microsoft has acknowledged the problem and assures users that it will be resolved in an upcoming cumulative update.

The next significant optional update, featuring multiple crucial fixes, is anticipated to be released during the last week of November. Before that, the Windows 11 24H2 Patch Tuesday update, scheduled for November 12, aims to address issues with SFC/scannow, Windows Update’s 8.63GB cache bug, and a bug that causes the Alt+Tab menu to pause momentarily with a black screen.

The subsequent wave of fixes will commence in the final week of November as part of the optional update. Finally, these corrections will be incorporated into the December 2024 Patch Tuesday update, after which Microsoft plans to pause optional updates for a month due to the holiday season in the United States.

Normal updates for Windows 11 24H2 will recommence in January.
