Yesterday, while I marked the 23rd anniversary of Windows XP in a post on X, I was reminded of this fresh release. In this article, I will share the wallpaper and provide some details about it.

If you’re like me and enjoy frequently updating your desktop wallpaper, you might have set up Windows Spotlight to cycle through images. However, there are moments when a hint of nostalgia is in order, and what better way to evoke that feeling than with the classic Bliss wallpaper?

The newly enhanced Windows XP Bliss wallpaper features vibrant new colors. It beautifully showcases the familiar rolling green hills beneath a bright blue sky dotted with fluffy white clouds, and now it’s available in 4K resolution. While the grass appears lush and the scene serene and sunny, some might find the color saturation slightly off. Therefore, we’ve included an alternative version that more closely resembles the classic XP wallpaper’s charm.

The first option is the official republished version from Microsoft Design, whereas the second is an unofficial edit that enhances the original saturation levels.

If you’re on the hunt for the original Bliss wallpaper, it’s still widely accessible on various websites (a quick Bing search should do the trick). The original Windows XP “Bliss” wallpaper was available in a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels.

Microsoft had also provided a slightly higher resolution variant of 1024 x 768 pixels, but this isn’t adequate for today’s large screens, making the 4K version a welcome addition.

Celebrating Windows XP’s 23rd Anniversary!

Windows XP has officially turned 23!

Launched on October 25, 2001, it celebrated its 23rd anniversary on October 25, 2024.

In contrast to Microsoft’s later operating systems (Windows 8, 10, or 11), which faced initial criticism, Windows XP was embraced warmly, with only some reservations regarding its heightened hardware demands.

Once users transitioned to Windows XP, it quickly gained popularity, revered for its rapid performance, intuitive interface, and superior compatibility. The legacy of Windows XP endures, and the Bliss wallpaper remains one of the most recognized digital images.

Out of curiosity, I set up Windows XP in one of my virtual machines to test functionalities. Windows Media Player works without issue, but unfortunately, most websites can no longer be accessed via Internet Explorer.

According to our tests at Windows Latest, the only website that still loads in Internet Explorer on Windows XP is Google.com.

Other sites, including Microsoft.com, Bing.com, and Copilot.microsoft.com, fail to open, which is expected given the age of the browser.

It’s fascinating that Google search remains functional in Internet Explorer, as Google has maintained a legacy version of its search engine that displays when accessed through outdated browsers.

Having ended support for Windows XP back in 2014, it is rarely used today. However, a small number of users and businesses continue to rely on this operating system.
