Protect Your Data: Prevent X (Twitter) from Training AI Grok with Your Information
This article provides guidance on how to prevent X (formerly Twitter) from utilizing your data for training AI Grok. Grok, an AI chatbot and search assistant created by the xAI organization, is designed to handle user inquiries on the X platform. Users can initiate a conversation by selecting the Grok icon located in the navigation bar. Similar to other social media networks like Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook, X gathers user data to refine its AI model. Grok can leverage your posts, interactions (such as replies, likes, and link clicks), outcomes, and inputs as part of its training process, and this information might be shared with xAI.
While the feature is accessible to both Premium and Premium+ subscribers, data sharing with Grok is automatically enabled for basic subscription users, which has garnered discontent. Fortunately, users have the ability to disable this data sharing option. Additionally, users can choose to erase their chat history with Grok. This guide will detail how to turn off or disable data sharing with Grok across all platforms, including web, Android, and iOS.
Disable X (Twitter) from using your data for AI Grok training via the web
To prevent X (Twitter) from using your data for Grok’s training on the web app, follow these steps:
- Log into your X account.
- Select More > Settings and privacy.
- Click on the Privacy and safety category.
- Find the Data sharing and personalization section on the right side.
- Choose Grok.
- Within Data Sharing, deactivate the toggle next to Allow your posts, interactions, inputs, and results with Grok to be used for training and fine-tuning.
Be sure to repeat this process for any other X accounts you have to opt out of model training.
How to opt out of Grok AI on X (Twitter) through mobile
X (Twitter) also allows you to turn off data sharing with Grok on both Android and iOS devices. To opt out of Grok AI on mobile, follow these procedures:
- Open the X app on your device.
- Click on the Profile icon situated in the upper left corner.
- Expand the Settings & Support section.
- Select Settings and privacy.
- Go to Privacy and safety.
- Click on the Grok option.
- Select Allow your posts, interactions, inputs, and results with Grok to be used for training and fine-tuning.
You can repeat these steps if you wish to enable data sharing with Grok again.
Make your X account private to restrict Grok from accessing your posts
You can restrict Grok from utilizing your posts in its training, which can be achieved by making your account private. Once your account is private, only those you follow will have access to your posts (inclusive of permanent links). While this measure doesn’t entirely stop data sharing with Grok, it acts as a good preventive step. Here’s how to do it:
- Log into your X (Twitter) account on the website.
- Navigate to More > Settings and privacy.
- Access Privacy & safety.
- Look for Audience, media and tagging under the Your X activity section.
- Click on the Protect your posts option.
- Press the Protect button within the confirmation dialog.
To return your account to public status, follow the same steps and uncheck the Protect your posts option.
For making your X account private on Android or iOS, use the following steps:
- Open the X app.
- Tap on the Profile icon.
- Go to Settings & Support > Settings and privacy.
- Navigate to Privacy and safety > Audience and tagging.
- Enable the Protect your posts option.
- Enable the Protect your videos option.
Erase your Grok conversation history on X (Twitter)
By default, all exchanges with AI Grok are saved, and you can view your Chat History by clicking on the hamburger icon at the top-right corner of your X account. If you prefer not to have this history maintained, you can delete all chat or conversation histories with AI Grok on the X platform in one go. Once deleted, conversations are removed from their systems within 30 days, although they may still retain some data for legal or security purposes. Here’s how to do it:
- Log into your X account using a web browser.
- Go to More > Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Grok.
- Select the Delete conversation history option.
- In the confirmation window that appears, click the Delete button.
Once completed, all previous chat history will be irretrievable.
For deleting Grok chat history on mobile, follow these steps:
- Open the X (Twitter) app.
- Click on Profile icon > Settings & Support > Settings and privacy.
- In Settings, navigate to Privacy and safety > Grok (under Data sharing and personalization) > tap on Delete conversation history.
- In the pop-up for confirmation, tap Delete.
And that’s all.
