Microsoft Acknowledges Windows 11 24H2 File Checker Issue, Fix Scheduled for November
Many undisclosed issues are emerging in Windows 11 24H2 as we conduct our evaluations. We’ve previously reported on some peculiar glitches, including the mouse pointer disappearing, Windows Update occupying an excessive 8.63GB of storage, and the malfunctioning of the System File Checker (SFC) tool.
The System File Checker serves as the primary solution for addressing file system errors and corruption. As highlighted by Windows Latest, this utility has demonstrated glitches, yielding erroneous results for a significant number of users on Windows 11 24H2. Microsoft has acknowledged this situation, confirming their awareness to Windows Latest. In a recent support document, the company has publicly recognized the problem.
Furthermore, Microsoft has rolled out a fix for the SFC /scannow issue in an update meant for testers through the Release Preview Channel.
It’s worth noting that this SFC error appeared in the preview versions of the OS and was reported by testers, yet it managed to persist into the final build of Windows 11 24H2. Following our reporting, Microsoft acted swiftly to correct the error in the Release Preview build 26100.2152.
With Patch Tuesday now behind us, users can expect this fix to be included in the forthcoming optional update in October 2024. The complete patch will be delivered alongside November’s security updates in the second week.
What Issues Occurred with the System File Checker in Windows 11 24H2?
Windows Latest has confirmed these issues through discussions with Microsoft and by conducting independent tests to analyze the output generated by the SFC scan.
Each time we performed a scan, we encountered the standard message: “Windows Resource Protection identified corrupt files and rectified them. For online repairs, details can be found in the CBS log file located at windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log, such as C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline repairs, refer to the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.” Notably, this message appeared twice, reinforcing our concerns regarding the malfunction.
Typically, SFC resolves errors upon the first attempt, though it may take some time. However, the fact that the same message appeared repeatedly suggested that the tool was not functioning as intended.
A deeper examination of the logs revealed discrepancies in the hash values of specific WebView2-related files.
With almost a month remaining until the next Patch Tuesday, Microsoft has numerous challenges ahead.
Issues with Mouse Pointer Disappearance and Update Cache
Windows Latest was the first to identify the issue of mouse cursors disappearing in several Chromium-based applications. When hovering over text fields, the cursor would vanish temporarily.
Another irritating issue involves an update cache file in Windows 11 24H2 that cannot be deleted. Attempts to remove it via Disk Cleanup were unsuccessful, and we faced the same results when trying to delete the Software Distribution folder or performing a repair installation. The only successful method was through a clean installation, which is not advisable for most users.
Microsoft is aware of the problems concerning the update cache and is likely to address this in the next optional update.
