Creating Custom Border Templates in Microsoft Word
If you’re looking to enhance the aesthetic appeal of your Word document, consider utilizing one of the available border templates or designing your own. Proper organization and presentation when sharing a document are essential, as they can significantly highlight its intended purpose.
With page borders in Microsoft Word, you have the flexibility to customize based on:
- Styles – Choose from various styles including dotted lines, continuous solid lines, double, and triple solid lines.
- Colors – Select from standard page border colors or customize them to your preference.
- Width – Adjust the default width, typically 1/2pt, to increase or decrease according to your needs.
How to Add Page Borders in Microsoft Word
1. Adding Page Borders
- Open the Word document to which you want to add page borders. Navigate to the top menu and select Design > Page Borders.
- A dialog box for page borders will open, allowing you to customize the style and other settings, such as color and whether to apply the borders to all pages. Additionally, you can choose to add artistic elements to the page borders, making them stand out more.
- Once you are satisfied with your selections, click the OK button to apply them.
This will apply the chosen borders to the entire document. If you wish to add borders to specific sections of your document, consider using paragraph borders as explained below.
2. Adding Paragraph Borders
- Open the Word document where you want to add borders. Go to the top menu and select Design > Page Borders.
- Select the paragraph you wish to enhance with borders, then navigate to the Borders section at the top and choose your desired style.
- You can modify the color and width of the border, then select the paragraph option and click OK to apply the changes.
- If you want to reuse your customized page borders, open a blank Word document, apply the desired borders, then save it as a Word Template.

3. Downloading Page Border Templates
While Microsoft Word allows for page border customization, some users may find the options somewhat limited. If that’s the case, you can download various page borders from online resources. There are numerous sites offering free page border templates.
After selecting a page border, you can further customize it within Word. Be sure to preview the border before applying it and experiment with different colors, widths, and styles to find the best match for your document.
Microsoft Word isn’t the only word processor that lets you enhance your documents with borders; you can also add them in Google Docs.
The next time you’re crafting a Christmas card or a similar project, consider employing these page borders to add a personal touch instead of relying solely on generic holiday templates.
Additionally, on your Windows 11 system, you can adjust your borders to include rounded corners, a dark theme, or even new colors.
