Do you recall Winamp? The legendary media player, Winamp Classic, has made a triumphant return, now as an open-source application. Originating in the 1990s and developed by Nullsoft, which was later acquired by AOL, Winamp holds a special place in the hearts of many users.

Even though its popularity has waned over the years, Winamp is still cherished by a dedicated community, and the new open-source format allows developers and enthusiasts to influence its ongoing development.

The official Winamp account on X (previously known as Twitter) shared the exciting announcement, stating that the “Winamp Legacy” source code is now accessible on GitHub. “Developers & retro fans, it’s your opportunity to shape the future of this iconic player,” the tweet emphasized.

Nullsoft, now a part of Microsoft, unveiled plans to transition Winamp to an open-source model earlier this year. The developers acknowledge that the player had “slowed down,” but with the shift to open source, they believe that passionate enthusiasts will enable Winamp to be updated and “meet current user needs.”

The current iteration of Winamp may not have the same feel as its earlier versions. However, a legacy edition is available for users to download. With the transformation to open source, Winamp has the potential not only to survive but to flourish in today’s tech landscape.

You can find the source code for Winamp Classic at this GitHub repository. If you don’t possess development skills but still wish to support Winamp, you can download the player from the official Winamp website.
