Scammers Exploit Microsoft Typo to Hack Microsoft Accounts
It’s no surprise that Microsoft has become a prime target for scams: from compromising Microsoft 365 accounts to a surge in AI-driven cyberattacks on the Redmond-based tech giant, the company faces numerous attacks daily.
While many of these scams can be easily identified—users have learned to recognize suspicious emails—hackers continuously devise clever methods to evade various security measures. The latest tactic involves altering the word “Microsoft”in emails sent by the company to “rnicrosoft.”
Can you identify the distinction? If you can’t, you may fall prey to this straightforward yet effective trick.
The ‘m’ in “rnicrosoft”is cleverly crafted from ‘r’ + ‘n’, which together resemble ‘m’, but they are not. I had to scrutinize this Reddit post closely to discover what was amiss.
Apparently, this tactic is proving effective in some regions, and according to this Reddit discussion, users are frequently targeted with it. The ‘rn’ is strategically placed in the email address where users typically do not look closely enough.
As illustrated in the accompanying picture, everything appears normal until you take a closer look. However, it might be too late if you don’t remain vigilant when necessary.
Thus, “rnicrosoft”is yet another common typo you need to be wary of. It’s right in front of you, but it requires careful observation to notice.
